iMessage not working

Since getting my iPad I have never been able to get iMessage on it to work. It does not sync with my messages on my phone. I have it turned on per instructions on these message boards and I have my settings on my iPhone set properly. What is wrong

Yes, the messages from iMessage are synced when you put the Caller ID on the phone to your email address associated with your iPad (and Apple ID). The iPad only uses an email address for it's "Caller ID" so in essence, that is the limiting factor. The iPhone can use as a caller ID either an email address or a phone number. However, you have to set your phone to having a caller ID as the email address in order for the messages to sync.

One downside to all of this is that when you get the devices synced, if someone sends you an iMessage, BOTH devices will alert you at the same time. It's a bit startling to have your phone and iPad beeping at the same time! However, you can answer from either one. Same applies to Facetime calls.

So if I change it on my iphone to email, when someone calls me will my regular caller ID still work showing me who is calling or with a phone number or will it come up unavailable because it is set for email? Gees, this is so confusing. Why isn't there something on the Imessage thing somewhere that explains all this??

Yeah, I know it's confusing. But that's the way it works for now. Hopefully iOS 6 will make things a little more uniform.

To answer your question, yes the normall caller ID will show and will identify you with a phone number when you call someone else.

There is a cheat sheet on all this on the Apple site somewhere, but I can't find it now. Here's a similar setup article that might be helpful.

I went back and did what you said and changed my iPhone setting to email and now they both are working fine. I tried it out texting my husband. :) thanks so much. Also, for the link. I'll read that as well. One other thing if you might know. There is an old picture of me that is attached to my messages that I send on my iPad. How do I get rid of that picture or choose a different one? I'm not even sure how that one got there!

The picture that you see should be associated with your picture in your Contacts database. Change that and you will change the picture icon on Messages.

One more thing... you shoud set the Caller ID to your email address in the Facetime settings as well. That way, you can receive Facetime calls from hubby on either your iPhone or iPad. Try it, it's fun!
