upgraded itunes and can't get beyond accepting legal before dissappears

srry for the long topic name, but that discripes it all. i have tried all the suggestions and read all the forum solutions but none have worked for me. I have recreated my music lib, turned off firewall antivirus. repaired and reinstall itunes several times. P4/windows home sp2.

top fixes for a new iTunes install/upgrade are

- turning off security software such as Norton before the install as Apple suggests

- installing QuickTime standalone, not regular
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html

- setting up Norton to allow iTunes

- scanning for malware with ewido (Free at www.ewido.net/en/)

- last but not least, using MSCONFIG to find Windows conflicts

hi Grizdog!

🙂 good post title.

i'm with both Katrina and pac_80 with this one. if you're just seeing a "flash" of a screen when you open itunes, and if you're seeing similar behavior when you're trying to launch your QuickTime, and you're getting no error messages whatsoever, the first thing i think about is an infestation of Qoologic adware on the PC that is interfering with your itunes.

the free trial version of Ewido (that Katrina linked you to) has been catching and killing that for most people.

Hi, b noir.

Have been following your advice and that of Katrina S for quite some time now. Only just plucked up the courage to install v6 but hey - worked like a charm! Admittedly it was a clean install on an "iTunes free" pc.

I have 2 questions for you

1) do you know if Norton have caught up with the Qoologic adware yet?

2) ewido is regularly recommended by you guys for cleaning out little beasties like this. Although I don't think I need it at this time I have looked at the website and see it is a free trial version. I assume this is fine for your first infection but won't the manufacturers only let you get one go at a trial before you have to stump up some dough for it?

hi Nigel! good to see you again.

1) do you know if Norton have caught up with the Qoologic adware yet?

(sigh) i don't know. it is mentioned as a threat over at Symantec (i think they call it Qoolaid there), but i'm not sure that they've caught up with the variant (or variants) that has been giving us grief. (Qoologic has been around for quite a while, but we only really started getting reports of the "flash" itunes and QuickTime error-message-free launch failures in late October 2005.)

I assume this is fine for your first infection but won't the manufacturers only let you get one go at a trial before you have to stump up some dough for it?

... good question ...

okay, the Ewido download page says this:

This setup contains the free as well as the plus-version of the ewido security suite. After the installation, a free 14-day test version containing all the extensions of the plus-version will be activated. At the end of the test phase, the extensions of the plus version are deactivated and the freeware version can be used unlimited times.

... but i'm not actually sure whether the free version that hangs around for you after the trial period also purges the Qoologic for you.

can anyone with hands-on experience with the free version of Ewido give Nigel some feedback on this?

(my authority on Ewido is Rachyl, but she hasn't been by the forums for a wee while now.)
