You can not change it in iPhoto -- you can only change it as you move it out of iPhoto. Select it in iPhoto and export as a JPEG

When I tried that it said I didn't have enough disk space, even when I chose the smallest sizes, etc. (?)
Can you give us the Exact error message you get?
"There is not enough disk space to complete that operation."
How big is your HD? How much free space on it?
I have no idea and don't know how to check?
What version of the OS do you have? What version of iPhoto?
I photo is '09

Open it in an app that supports HEIC and either use a Save As or Export command to render a version in jpeg.
Photos.app or Preview can do this, and they're both on your machine already.
You need to have High Sierra installed, if you want to convert HEIC to JPEG using Preview or Photos. On an older system use the online converter heictojpg.com
