How do I get rid of the birthdays calendar from iCal and Notifications?

My iPhone has created its own Birthdays calendar in iCal using the birthdays listed in my Address Book. I deselected it so it does not appear in my Calendar on the phone, but the birthdays still appear in the Notifications. I cannot seem to find any way to get rid of them. Anyone have any idea?
