My school required Symantect Endpoint Protection (Mac compatable v. 11.0.6) on all computers in their network. Is the software necessary or merely a resource hog?

Symantec goes beyond being a resources hog as it is actually dangerous to use with OS X. I would not install it on my Mac. If the school requires it, I would refuse to use myMac on their network.

If you don't mind me asking, what is dangerous about the software? Are there any alternatives you suggest (e.g. malware vs. antivirus).
