iCloud mail is down AGAIN

I am NOT a happy camper, Apple - can't get email once again because iCloud Mail is down. Again.

Fix it. Get it right. When I read that it affects only a "small number" of users that means nothing. I'm ALWAYS ONE OF THOSE AFFECTED.

Sorry for the shouting - I haven't had my coffee yet.

Grrrr.

Don't know why everyone seems to think this is a free service. It's not free, you/me have spents thousands of hard earned money buying into the hardware and OS that is centric around iCloud. The whole ethos of iOS & OSX is based around the use of the Cloud. Apples own marketing and culture is focused on the use of iCloud.

It's not free, we paid and bought into the idea and the least to expect is better communication to it's customers. Yes, systems go down, thats fine, but please be more informative with whats happening.

Indeed the iCloud email service outage is affecting many many people worldwide. Clearly, Apple is trying to minimize the damage, but a more appropriate, respectful response would be something like:

"We're are incredibly embarrassed by this interruption in service and we are dedicating all of our resources to rectifying the situation. We truly value all of our customers and we hope that you will bear with us as we address this problem."

Mr. Cook, feel free to copy and paste - but only if you really mean it, and intend to act on it.

So far Apple seems to be so focused on the iPhone 5 release that the very people who use these products get short shrift.

I was traveling in Europe in July 2008 when Apple made the switch to MobileMe. My email was down for at least a week but when I returned home I did pursue getting compensation. It was difficult but I finally contacted the PR rep for Canada. I was paying a subscriber fee at that time and was given two free months by moving my expiry date ahead.

I just found this link, http://www.imore.com/got-mobileme-email-problems . What is very interesting is that it only affected 1% of users at that time as well. What are the chances of being in that 1% again? Maybe just very unlucky.....Oh, must check the most recent update at noon PDT.

It's a free service because you can use it for free.

You don't have to pay FOR THE SERVICE.

They give it to you for free, it's up to you to use it or not.

.mac and Mobile Me was paid services, with iCloud you have your iCloud mail address and all the things related (syncing with all your devices) FOR FREE.

You paid for an iPhone, for an iPad, iPod or a Mac. But you do NOT pay for iCloud. You pay the device, not the iCloud service.

Hi Ray,

For Mac Mail you just change the Email address field in account setup to your domain's email address. On iOS devices, it's a little trickier, you have to setup a new "dummy" account besides the iCloud account with the email address of your domain (as well as your iCloud email address in the regular way). When you send an email you have the option to choose which account to send out of, choose your domain one instead of the iCloud one. On your own domain email address, you will need a valid SMTP server address entered in the settings so that emails will go out properly.

It's a faff and I wish Apple would allow you to just edit the reply-to field like in Mac Mail, but it works once setup.

I am back up here in Denver. When all my backlog emails came in I noticed a BLANK email from Yesterday that, when opened had nothing in it. When I tried to delete it, there was a rejection, saying I was not allowed to delete and had to be done at server level.

This is problematic. The way to get rid of it, if you too have it, is to first move it to the JUNK folder, then go into that folder and delete it. Then, go into TRASH and delete all the trash. That gets rid of it.

Interestingly, that blank email appeared at the time the system went down yesterday, according to the time stamp.

Good luck to all. What a major failure on the part of APPLE. They ignored us to avoid bad press. Not good. If Steve had been alive, he would postponed the event to help his loyal customers, first and turned it into a major PR win.

Anyway, all the best to my friends in pain. Take care and enjoy the rest of the week.
