Q: 10.8.1 network home issues

I help a small school with the os x server and computers,


We have a mac mini running 10.6.8 server, and most clients are 10.5 or 10.6 with no issues.

 

Students have network homes shared via afp:// and have not had any issues

 

 

We installed 30 new imac, each running 10.8.1

 

If one student logs in with their account, it seems to go quickly, they get logged in see their stuff and can work.

 

If more that 1, it takes forever to log in. A class of 20 is taking 40 minutes for everyone to get logged in.


It just spins after the password is entered and eventually gets logged in.

 

 

All the other clients 10.6 or 10.5 still working fine, but 10.8.1 just is very very slow. The lab is unusable.

 

 

Everything is networked via gigabit ethernet, and once they get logged in things go well.

 

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

    It has something to do with the login process maybe.... I wondering if it hanging up on DHX2 protocol?

    I thought about that, but is 10.6.8 considered legacy as far as the AFP protocol is concerned.

     

    If so, why would it work with one or two people logging in, but not everyone in the lab?

    10.6.8 isn't considered legacy, but whatever implementation or process of logging on to 10.6.8 Server via 10.8.1 Client has some kind of bug maybe via DHX2 ... but at least it's worth a try in testing a few computers....

     

    Like I said there's some kind of bug when dealing with more than a few computers... at least with worth a try and if it did work at least it's might be a workaround til they fix it.

    Thanks for the thoughts, I implemented the changes, but will have to test tomorrow with multiple people loggin in.

     

    As a note I watched a log of logs and afp stuff today.

     

    Would the fact the 10.8 were imaged using deploystudio matter, I wouldn't think so it just doesn't make sense why it works with 1 to 2 people logging in, but not more than that.

    I would recommend installing 10.6.8 on those new iMacs its a good OS and it works very well on networks as you know, that's what I have done on my netwok, after all 10.8 is in its early development and there will be issues with it.

    And of course Apple are not really bothered when it comes to networking Macs, you can tell that when you think about the demise of the XServer and the poor server tools they now have, Snow Leopard sever in my apinion is still the best they produced, its been all down hill since then.

     

    Also when you start getting alot of networked macs watch out for AFP crashes, this is a known issue that Apple know about and claim they have fixed in 10.7.4 but I can't confirm this as I have diched AFP and I use a Windows server with smb, (set up a magic triangle). this has been working very well so far, and of course that way you get to use a real print server.(something you don't get with Lion or Mountain Lion)

    One thing I should mention is Apple are improving the compatibility with binding Macs to windows servers and Lion does this really well.(it seems to me that with the dumbed down version of there sever OS that's what Apple want Mac network administrators to do).
