Just before I bought my new mac, I saw a genius at Apple Store open files/launch app with the return/enter key.
And I just forgot to ask him if it had to be configured/customized....
when I tried to do it with my mac, it did not work....
Do you guys know how to open files with the return key on Mountain Lion?
I just saw the guy doing it...

Are sure he was using the Return key? In the Finder? Command-Down Arrow will open the selected item(s) in the Finder.

well, I remember asking the genius, and having him answer me that it was now "like on windows"...
well, i'll first try with those keys, I'm on iPad now....

Was it from LaunchPad?
Otherwise, it's a hack of some sort. Return takes you to Rename.

the return key does not work too, say for instance, in the system preferences icons. i want to use the keyboard more now, as the battery to the mouse drains faster. but although i can run around with the keyboard arrow keys, when i press the return key, the selected icon does not launch, only a beep sounds,.

Turn on full keyboard access in the Keyboard System Prefs. Then, use the spacebar to activate the outlined prefpane.

I've done that, but still "return key" would not launch particular sytem prefs icons.
It doesn't. The Spacebar does.
