Is There A Safer/Better Place to Download a Different Browser?

Hello-

I hope this is the right Community to post this question.

I was notified by a frequent flyer that I would not be getting a fairly large amount of miles because I used Safari, a browser that they say is owned by Google, and therefore since Google has it's own Point system, it is incompatible with distributing the Miles I earned. I tried to get in contact with somebody at the airline to get a more detailed answer as to why I will not be receiving the Miles I earned, but no success. They said I need to use a different browser and they mentioned IE or Firefox.

OK, so I will use Firefox for dealing with this airlines' miles award distribution.

My main question is (I have only used Safari), is there a better place as far as security and staying away from a website that might make downloading Firefox more than the download and install that it should be? For example, ease os the install, installing the latest version of Firefox, etc. When my sister downloaded Chrome recently she found out that her personal info. and other privacy issues had majorly be violated. I would like to try and avoid any problems like this by using a reputable website and download the latest version.

Does downloading another browser on a MacBook Pro that is 3 years old cause any areas of concern that I should be aware of? is there anything different having 2 browsers installed on the MBP that a novice should know about? is there a website that one could recommend that I use if Apple does not have a place to get the latest version of this browser?

I appreciate any special considerations I should be aware of, and maybe there is none, but I do not want to be dealing with the issues my sister is apparantly dealing with from using a website to download Chrome that seems to have violated her personal information and other informat about her system.

If you have a recommendation for a well-known website to get this browswer and if you know what the latest version is for the Mac, I wold appreciate that info.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 500 GB HD 7200 rpm

Seems strange.

Internet Explorer isn't avaialble for Mac's however Firefox is.

Chrome is by Google which does spy on you. So use Firefox instead.

Here is a safe link for downloading Firefox, It also doubles by checking the versions of your installed browser plugins like Flash, Silverlight etc so that you can update these if they are not current.

http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/

However Firefox isn't privacy secure from online tracking etc (like from Google) unless additional add-ons are installed (Ghostery, Ad Block Plus, BetterPrivacy, Click&Clean, TACO, NoScript, HTTPSEveryWhere etc.,) if that is your concern. However there is a learning curve to using these browser add-ons so take your time and install one at a time as your web browsing will be altered somewhat as a result. (and some sites you will need to "whitelist" or you can't buy or order anything with the add-ons enabled)

Firefox is just a web browser, they are not interested in tracking your behavior etc., online like Google does.

Firefox will auto-update it and it's add-ons automatically, but not the browser plug-ins as they are cross-browser and installed by the user. Like Flash and Silverlight. You can also use the "About Firefox" to apply the update if there is one manually.

No. It's another program like any other.

None really, you can use all of them (Chrome, Safari, Opera, Firefox) on a Mac.

They are slightly different than Safari your used too, however things work the same or better in some cases that Safari. Just takes some time to get used to using a differnet browser, however Firefox is the most feature rich browser with all it's customization and add-ons galore. Safari is quite dull and depressing actually.

Apple doesn't recommend other browsers, but it's your machine and you can install any software you wish.

You won't have that problem with Firefox, likely what occured is she signed up with Google's GMAIL which if you don't signout after logging into it, it will track you and save your search terms. Also with all the ad tracking online Google does too.

Also if she installed any Google software, like Google Earth, can potentially cause issues as it leaves a persistant update program installed.

The thing with Goggle and Facebook is not to use them at all, then they can't track you.

Currently Google doesnt't if you log out, however Facebook will track you even if you log out of Facebook.

Current Mac version of Firefox is 15.0.1, which will get automatically installed and auto-updates by itself.

Wow, thanks so much. Great help. There is no problem with having 2 browsers installed on the MBP, right? This machine needs some work so I am reluctant, but also not being able to get my skyMies because of a purchase I made on Safari seems strange. The Delta supervisor told me it is because Safari is controlled by Google (not sure if I am using the right terms she used) so since it has it's own Point system, it does not give the right amount of SkyMiles for the purchases made through the SkyMiles website which brings one to the website they want to shop on and then keeps track of how much you spend and you should get that number of Miles depending on how much you spend.

With that said, I just assume I go to the link you provided (I think you provided) and download the latest version there. There are several other Firefox versions or types of Firefox browsers, but they apparantly are mostly for developers.

I did not follow you with the plug-ins or add-ons, and if these are for extra security and purchasing items online I would want to be more clear on those. However I do not want something that will get in the way of me ordering from the Delta website that once signed in it takes me to the website I chose to shop at, in this case it is Crate & Barall.

If there is anything I missed and you suggest I review it in your post, please let me know. I think the problemw ith my sister is she downloaded it from an off the wall website and they use her personal info. in an unethical way that caused her a lot of trouble that she will be dealing with for a long time (it looks that way).

Cheers.

I did not see but I scanned quickly. Is there a better place or what website wold you recommend I download the latest Mac version of Firefox? is it important that I download the Mac version or are all the versions the same? I did not see specifically one for Mac, but CNET did talk about a Mac version but I did not see wheree I cold download that.

Anything that will get in the way of shopping from a base site which is americanexpress.skymilesshopping.com, clicking on the store I want to go to, and I am taking there while the base site is supposed to keep track of my purchases and give SkyMiles accordingly to how much one spends.

cheers

Are you still around? Things did not go as planned. I am in need of some support. let me know when you are around.

What do you mean by "Just click on Mac.Direct from Mozilla?" On that URL I do not see Mac. In your upper post, I do not see the box with the fox inside and the version Firefox 15.0.1. So the upper reply you posted I did not go by anything on that post and I think I should have.

In your lower post you have a link, I clicked that, and I do not see Mac but I clicked the small box that says Fiefox-free download 15.0.1. One download started and finished and that was called 15.0.1dmg and that went into my downloads folder and stayed in the downloads window, before could do anything another download started, and that finished and that is Firefox 15-1.0.1.dmg. They just sat in the downloads folder and the downloads window.

I was taken to another firfox webpage that is even more confusing, but that websiote was set to mobile. I did not get the window where I am supposed to drag the fox into the Applications folder. Why 2 downloads? Why the small difference? What should I do now? Are all the comments you made in your first reply things I should read for this install? How do I get to the webpage that has the instructions? It took me back to the nearly blank page but the clickable box that says Firefox Free Download--Diffeerent by Design. 15.0.1, but the instructions that say to drag the fox to the app folder is gone.

I really do not want to make things worse so some feedback and help would be appreciated.

Double-click the .dmg file (the first one). That will mount the disk image on the desktop

User uploaded file

and open a window with the firefox icon and an alias to the Applications folder.

User uploaded file

Just drag the FF icon onto the folder (in the same window).

You can then check your Applications folder and ensure that FF is present before closing the window and ejecting the .dmg (eject by either clicking the symbol next to the .dmg icon in the Finder sidebar,

User uploaded file

or right-click or ctrl-click on the desktop .dmg icon and choose eject).

You can then trash the original .dmg file if you wish.

The version downloaded should be the right one as the download tool 'sees' what system the request is coming from.

Why when I clicked the orange box that looks like the box in WZZZ's post did it download one file and right after another one? They are a little diferent. I see nooonday said to double click the first one, but I am curious why the 2 files with a slight difference? One is Firefox 15-1.0.1.dmg and the second one it downloaded is 15.0.1.dmg

Should I start over?

Thanks. I am a retard with this kind of stuff so please bare with me. Usually things go OK but this seems to be much worse for some reason. So these files are both in my Downloads folder and in the downloads wondow that pops up when downloading a file from Safari (meaning the downloads window hides in Safari when not in use. :-)

So I close all apps and click the 15.0.1. and that should open the disk image. Right? Once the disk image is on the desktop I follow the instructions above. On the website they made it sound like the window with the fox and the Applications folder would automatically open up and all I would need to do would be to drage the fox into the Applications folder, but that did not come up. I did see the disk image thing on the desktop, but I was tired so I right clicked it and ejected it and went to bed. This was last night and today I thought I would either start all over or hopefully get someone like you who is willing to help me.

Double-click.

Closing other applications is not strictly necessary in this case, but is good practice generally.

Usually it does.

No problem; double-click to open the .dmg file again, and if the window doesn't open automatically, just double-click on the desktop icon and proceed from there.
