But one suggestion I can easily make is to get a printer that supports Apple's AirPrint. They are listed on the "Printer and Scanner Software" link near the top of this article:

The reason I sent you this whole article is so you can see how to set up your printer once you buy it.

Their OS X support is excellent, their warranty is better than most, and they offer free lifetime technical support. Repacement ink cartridges (if you want an inkjet) are inexpensive and last a long time.
Get an AirPrint capable one.
I do not advocate any current production HP printers, due to the opposite of the above criteria.
Read reviews (Amazon is a good place to start) and draw your own conclusions.
