At least your research helps in (re-)establishing that indeed we are dealing with a server overload here, so thanks for that. Let's just hope Apple will indeed fix it soon, or we may be screwed big time come next week (iOS 6, OS X Update 10.8.x for Facebook integration). Anyway, measures in which people are suffering from this issue seem to differ widely, as some report being unable to download iTunes Store content (i.e. Podcasts); others are unable to download updates for iOS Apps, but can purchase new Apps; and most (me included) can do both afforementioned things, but cannot apply updates to Mac (System) Apps.

I think there is something strange going on, inside Mountain Lion in relation to the software update servers. My iMac seems to be unable to see my Mac Mini anymore, with Mountain Lion.

Very strange and quite a hassle.

I am in contact with an Apple senior tech support advisor on the phone and email Sent him screen shots of all the errors and a link to our page here.

probably his answer will be wait until is fixed!!!

Actually the oppsite in part, he is very helpful. While waiting for the issue to die down on its own is the prefered method, he is looking into this issue with the team

I got the same problem but when I called apple tech support, they did some trouble shooting then they told me, they can help to backup my Mac then reinstall my OS X 10.8.1!! or I can to bring my Mac to Apple store for fixing some inside code. IIsn't it just DNS error or server problem, is it? why do I need to wipe out my Mac then restore my backup?

your system is fine, its their servers or something. I did a clean install a few weeks ago, mine if fine. Give it time, and they are working on it. I will post update later if/when I get one. No need to hassle up to a apple store or wipe the system

It appears it is a DNS issue. I added the 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4 to the DNS and the issue went away on both my Pro and Air laptops.

Try this:

After adding the DNS entries

Sign out of App Store

Shut down

start up again.

It may be that the DNS servers qued is causing it to not work

Indeed it work for me; adding 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4 to the DNS.

Go to:

System preferences

Network

Advanced

DNS

On DNS Servers click + (Bottom of the window)

Add both 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4

Press OK

Apply

Then check for the Software Update
