Someone mentioned that I would have to connect printers by using the IP address option...something about Apple Talk no longer being supported. Is that true? How would I do that?
It is true. AppleTalk is not supported in 10.6. So you will need to manually add the printer by selecting the IP icon - instead of the Default icon - and selecting one of the available protocols, such as HP Jetdirect or LPD.
What you will need to know is the IP address of the printer. If there are others in your work place still printing to the printer, one of them should be able to print a network configuration page, or Windows test page if they are using Windows, and this will give you the IP address of the printer.
With the IP address available, open Print & Fax and click the plus button to add. From the Add Printer window, click the IP icon and change the Protocol menu to HP Jetdirect-Socket. Enter the IP address of the printer. Leave the queue name blank (from memory it will not be available). Change the Name to something more meaningful than the IP address and if you want to enter something in Location you can. Then in the Print Using menu, drop it to Select printer software and browse to the supporting PPD for the printer. Click OK and then click Add to complete the queue creation.
Hope this helps. Reply if you need more assistance.
