Sep 13, 2012 9:45 AM in response to smnycby BDAqua,Sounds like a bad DVD or bad Optical drive, see if you can Verify the DVD with Disk Utility.

Sep 13, 2012 10:14 AM in response to BDAquaby smnyc,Thank you! Actually, I did finally get disk utility to start off the DVD and successfully repaired my internal start up hard drive (or so the disk utility report said), as per suggestions I've read in other discussions on this Time Machine problem.
But the problem remains: stuck on "calculating changes" permenantly. Haven't had a back up since Sept 5th. I'll call Apple tech today, but I'd love to be able to fix it myself and any suggestions are much appreciated.

Can't imaging something not being covered there.

Sep 13, 2012 12:17 PM in response to BDAquaby smnyc,Great advice. Indeed, the solution was there and easy to follow. I'll know for sure if it's working when it stops backing up this time, after a Time Machine reset -- been about an hour so far. I'll let you know.
thanks.

Sep 14, 2012 1:47 PM in response to BDAquaby smnyc,In sum, tried it all, then finally talked with applecare and they recommended wiping the drive and starting over -- which I did and just completed the initial back up. So far so good. Great chatting with you!
