my iphone 4s has no reception since 2 weeks and the UK carrier says it is apple fault as I can't even see the imei number. What should I do?

A missing IMEI # is a critical failure. Usually the result of jailbreaking/hacking.

Regardless of the cause, the phone will need to be replaced. There is no way to correct a missing IMEI.
