Is there any app for ipad like microsoft word that is for free?
Don't know of anything that is close that is also free. The closest to replacing Office on an iOS device are QuickOffice and Docs to Go, but both are commercial apps.
There are some free Word doc readers, but nothing free with full editing of native .doc or .docx files.
Can you spring for a buck for an app?

you can download pages which is exactly like MS word but it cost 20 and you can get it on all apple products and you can use Icloud to work on it later same with keynote witch is like powerpoint and numbers which is like Excell

Download CloudOn app, itt allows you to use Microsoft Word. Only downside is you need to be connected to the internet.
