To install applications on Mtn. Lion that come from sites other than the Mac App store or Identified Developers, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Security and Privacy.

When the Security and Privacy Pane opens, click on the lock on the lower left corner to make changes, and once you enter your admin password, click on the radio button for "allow application downloaded from anywhere".

Now close System Preferences.

After installing the XDcam Transfer, you may want to return to System Preferences and turn the protection back on.

Pilot error indeed...

You seem to not be aware of what dmg files are. They are what's called "disk images" and a very common way to deploy software for the mac. Think of them like a virtual disk that contains your software. Once you double-click the dmg file, it mounts, just as if you had plugged a pen drive, or inserted a dvd. They usually contain either an installler, or the application itself.

So you either run the installer and it sets your application up, or if the dmg already contains the program you need, just drag it to your Applications folder.
