There is a lock with a refresh circle around it in the top right corner by the battery. What is it and how do I remove it? It has stopped letting me FaceTime and iMessage.

That's the rotation lock icon. Turn off rotation lock to clear it.
Where is the rotation lock? I need to turn it off and can't find it.
Rotation Lock can be controlled in two different ways: either by the side switch (located next to the volume up/down controls) or in the Recent Apps tray. The initial default is via the Recent Apps tray.
Check the status of Settings > General > Use Side Switch to:. If this is set to Lock rotation, the switch on the side of the iPad will lock rotations.
If this is set to Mute then the rotation lock control is in the Recent Apps tray. Double tap the home button and, in the tray which appears at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right to see the control.

Have you found out where in the world this rotation lock is located? I found a thread where a person posted a 154 page link to the iPhone manual! Really? talk about being sarcastic. thanks for any Help you can provide... I'm tired of all this non-sense
OK. When on the Home Screen press the home button 2x times. Then you should see a bunch of (opened) apps.
Swipe to the left and tap the silver/grey button next to the music controls.
Rotation Lock provides that your iPod goes to the Landscape Mode.
Obviously who ever responded to this message has no idea hat they are talking about with the new update the swipe from left to right to its farthest point does not lead to the old rotate icon not the music player options
I just had a brain fart :) from lock screen, swipe screen from bottom to top and it will give you those new short cups with the wifi and lamp feature, we'll guess what else is there too? you screen rotation button! Thank you :)
My advice works in iOS 6, the thread starter never especially said which iOS version his running. (You can find iOS 5.1.1 in the description of the first post.
