Can you pinch 'n zoom on SVG images?

I've placed SVG images in my epub file but the pinch 'n zoom feature doesn't work on them. Is this a bug with iBooks? is it intentional? is there a workaround someone can share with the group? The SVG images are of maps & it's crucial that the user can pinch n' zoom on them to improve the scale.

Any help would be much appreciated.
