I got into the site and ordered mine at 12:35am Pacific Time in the US.  I have an arrival ft of 9/21.  When I check the status of my order I do intermitannly get an error message like you do too.

Yeah it's odd, I think it might be because their order system it being hammered by so many requests so its not able to process all requests that are coming, especially tracking.

However mine did come up a few times successfully, around 1 in 6-8 tries so I took a picture of it :)

Well, I was able to go online and see when my phones will be delivered.  Even with ordering within 4 hours of pre-orders being taken in the US, my phones will not arrive until Ocotber 5th.  The world isn't going to end.  I won't starve.  My current phone will still take and make calls, but I think it's pretty poor.  And the reason I say that is a friend of mine just placed an order with Sprint (more than 6 hours after I ordered with Apple directly) and they guaranteed delivery on the 21st.  I understand every carrier get's a certain number of phones, but it's kind of sad that I could have gone to a carrier as opposed to Apple directly and gotten my order on launch day.  Oh well.  Life goes on........

I read a report by a stock market analyst that said that Apple sold out the initial inventory within the first hour.

I suspect that the "in two weeks" is an outside estimate of delivery date and they will beat it in many cases of early orderers, like me.

I hate to be cynical, but also as an Apple stockholder, I can understand that the last thing they want is to have units gathering dust on the shelves on launch day. News reports of people standing all night in the rain, sleeping on sidewalks and the like doesn't hurt business. Has anyone ever queued all night for a Samsung?

Apple make great products and, they seem to be savvy marketers as well. I don't think they will lose any customers because they had to wait a few extra few days to get their new phone.

Maybe - but I was trying to get on the AT&T site as well at the time I was trying to load Apple's, and the AT&T site never once came up - it was always "down for maintenance" or errors on the site.  The fastest method I saw was through the Apple store app.  I had one ready to go that would have been delivered on the 21st, but I was unsure on the signature required for delivery, so I hesitated and researched.  By the time I logged back on, it was in 2 weeks.  I'm still okay with that, I'd rather have the peace of mind of knowing it's signature required than to have ordered without knowing if it would sit all day in front of my house before I got home!

This is a reply I posted on another thread - thought it could do some good here too.

"Ok so just to confirm a few things for those who might benefit from knowing:

I've got off the phone to an Apple rep in the UK because my order wasn't showing up online when I tried to search for it and I pathetically got a bit panicked.

First of all, she basically said because the system is so overloaded at the moment, some parts of the site regarding order status etc aren't working properly, so if you click your order number and it's not being recognised or loading or whatever, don't panic.

Second of all, I asked what the delivery date estimates really meant and she confirmed that any orders made before 9-9:30am this morning (UK) were in the 'first batch' and were guaranteed either BEFORE or on the 21st. (She wasn't shy in reiterating that they could arrive before the launch date!) She added that those who got a 21/9 launch date delivery confirmation would DEFINITELY get them then and this date wouldn't change or slip back because "Apple didn't do that to their customers".

After 9-9:30am, delivery dates were pushed back (2 weeks) because launch date pre-orders sold out (as we know).

I'm sorry to say that those who got a 2 week delivery date from launch unfortunately won't be getting them earlier than that, as some people here have speculated. Those who got a launch day date will definitely get theirs then."

I don't think it is likely that Apple will deliver the initial orders on Sept 21 (or before) and then none for exactly 7 days at which time they will fill all the "in two weeks" orders. Okay, that is speculation, but . . .

I, too, thought the extra week in between was odd. Of my three phones, which had to be placed in separate orders, one made the cutoff and will be here on the 21st. The other two will be here Oct 2. The sad thing is the phone that will be here is mine and my husband is the primary account holder for AT&T. We will not activate the phones until we have all of them. At least I can look at mine and see how pretty it is!

I'm not sweating the delivery date just the way there were still bugs in the store being down, orders not delivring on launch day, independant carriers having better delivery dates...etc.   The business end.  Personally, I don't mind the 3 week delay since I will have to get a new case due to the new size...I'm good.

What bugs? When you have over a million people trying to order at one time there are going to be problems. As far as orders not delivering on launch day that would be the carrier not apple. I would love to see you do a better job than they are doing under the same circumstances.

I'm showing delivery of Sept. 21.  My case ships on Sept. 21 via ground.  I'll probably go a week there doing my best not to drop it.

I, for one, am sure glad to not work in their fulfillment warehouse right about now!

    +1

  • kgipp Level 1 Level 1 (20 points)

I kind of wonder if they control the amount of inventory in each batch to try to prevent overload of the servers when everyone tries to activate.  I'm not sure why everyone is surprised, this usually happens.

  • rbrylawski Level 6 Level 6 (11,815 points)

Well, I ordered new cases for both new phones a couple days ago from CaseMate.  They'll both be here early next week.  Sad that there won't be a phone to go in them until October 5th, but there are far worse things in life one could be dealing with.....
