Screen sharing in Mountain Lion iMessage

Hi,

Screen Sharing does not work with the iMessage Account.

It only works with AIM or Jabber logins (iChat style Buddy Lists)

Hello,

I'm logging into AIM via Messages and trying to use the screen share option just like I used to in iChat via AIM. The person I'm connecting to is running the same verison of Mt Lion and doing the same steps to accept and/or initate a screen sharing session. They seem as if they are going to connect, the Mac makes that familiar noise upon connection. However, nothing happens on my end and a failure to connect messages pops up on my friend's screen. Both of our FireWalls are turned off and our router settings aren't preventing any incoming invites.

Anyone else having this issue?

Visible Invites on port 5678 using the UDP Protocol.

The Connection Process is on port 16402 as first choice.

The Video or Audio chat is also on port 16402 as first choice.

iChat regards a Screen Share as an Audio Chat with extras.

The extras are a VNC connection to "Show" the Desktop of the other computer.

This VNC connection is on a random port.

This means the router needs to be using UPnP (which allows the Apps to tell the router which ports to open.)

Other "features" such as DoS (Denial of Service Protection) and SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) can get in the way.

Blocking Pings also effects whether it works

Can you Video or Audio Only chat ?

Video is a better test as it uses a wider bandwidth. (Screen Sharing use more then Audio only chats).

It is late where I am and it will be some time before I pick on any replies. (20 or so hours)

Before we upgraded to Mt Lion, Screen Share was working perfectly fine on Lion via iChat. Nothing has changed on either systems but the OS update.

We can FaceTime without any issues, when we log into AIM and try to kick off the screen share is when we won into problems. Audio chat works fine too.

Hi,

Essentially FaceTime uses the same Video and Audio ports as iChat and Messages.

When I tried this in Messages beta myself I had to repeatedly send requests to my other computer which had previously done Screen Sharing.

Eventually it seemed Messages "re-learnt" where the other computer was and what it had to do.

I have nothing else to suggest at this time.

Curious if there is a way to connect screen sharing from LION ichat to ML Messages?

It will work if the Messages App has either AIM (or AIM Valid) names or Jabber valid IDs listed as accounts.

(i.e the iChat side of things)

I have Screen Shared to Snow Leopard and Leopard computers.

My G4 tower will boot into an iChat 3 version.

This will only accept Video Chats if the iChat 3 end calls ( I have yet to try Screen Sharing with iChat 3).

I actually don't have a computer that I can booth into Lion whilst being in Mountain Lion.

Lets say you are using an iCloud issued @me.com name as the iMessages Apple ID

Go to the Message Preferences > Accounts and us e the + button

Click the AIM Choice.

Add the @Me.com name in full

Click Done.

You will now have an AIM Account in the Accounts list

In the window Menu it will now says Buddies (CMD + 1)

This will show you the Buddy List

Add AIM or AIM Valid Buddy names.

In the Video Menu Screen Sharing will now be an option you can tick (or Untick)

You could also Add GoogleTalk or other Jabber IDs to the Accounts list. (GoogleTalk is a Jabber server)

Screen Sharing is AIM to AIM or Jabber to Jabber.

I had to go offline and then go to imessages preferences/aim account/server settings/ and uncheck ssl then change status to available to go online to make mine screenshare work.

Genius! It worked, thank you!

I wonder why Apple made that change. The previous verison of the OS it was always pointed to the Oscar server.

The oscar server was also used by the ICQ set up and apps when AOL/AIM owned that as well.

It was sold off not that long ago and for a while the ICQ users could still access AIM. About a two years ago now, the new Operators of ICQ set up their own servers for ICQ and there was a more formal separation of the two services.

Also during the "lifetime" of the oscar servers AIM introduced the ability to login using SSL

From time to time this appeared to be problematic as this required a Manual Login each time the server dropped the connection. (the regular server reconnects each time without prompting)

These drops appeared more Frequent in SSL then the regular sever and sometimes required many a renewed Login in iChat (Untick "Enable this Account" and re-tick again immediately).

There have been previous changes of the servers AIM (in apps on PC and Macs) and other clients (other apps) have allowed to access their service.

Older App and version of the AIM app tend to keep the older servers as the point of contact and these tend to still work.

It's more like a natural load spreading by adding new AIM users to new Servers.

I'm assuming your the administrator as otherwise you will need to create " new user " with password to access

the computer in question.

Secondly create or sign in iCloud and check mark " Back to my Mac "

Do the same thing on the second computer

Your computer can now be accessible home network or fromanywhere with an internet connection.
