Help: Cannot open Word Docs

All of a sudden I cannot open my Word documents. It tells me that "_____ is being used by another user" then it says "document might be in use or is not a valid word document"

- It is NOT in use anywhere else. This is my personal laptop.

- It seems to be only the .doc files. I changed the extension to docx and it still wouldn't open. I made a new doc on a PC and then tried it on my Mac and it won't open.

- And please, don't state the obvious like "restart the computer". I would think its obvious that I will restart my laptop.

- Every since I've upgraded to Mountain Lion, I've been needing to do disk repairs, so i did that.

It is a MacBook Pro

OS is up to day (Mountain Lion)

Word 2008 12.3.3

Try this.

If you have MS Office 2008 installed in /Applications, and MS Word is a separate application in /Applications, move it back into the MS Office folder, and then drag a fresh copy of Word to your dock. Retry .doc(x).

The act of the OS X upgrade may have confused your original MS Office 2008/MS Word 2008 (whichever applies) about support files. If you have the media, and it is not for PowerPC, I would remove, then reinstall MS Office 2008, or that copy of MS Word. Then perform a new MS Office 2008 (or MS Word 2008) installation, with appropriate MSFT updates.

Ensure that Get Info on a .doc(x) file has open default set to MS Word.
