out of no where this icon appeard in the top right corner of my iphone 3gs. i read the other discussions and tried double hitting the home button and scrolling all the way over but the only thing that is there is my audio control, then a volume control. nothing else.. help please?

You don't see that control (portrait orientation lock) because I don't think the 3GS has that feature. Take a look at p.12-13 of the User Guide to identify the icon/symbol you see.
i looked at that, and my icon isnt there...
Post a screenshot. Is your iPhone jailbroken?
also, it is making my screen not rotate....
When you double click the home button and swipe from left to right, you don't see the button on the left as shown here...
