Brand new iphone 4 has no space, but no apps, pics, or music either.

Today I had to purchase a replacement iphone 4. I sync'd the old phone a few days back so I know what I had was updated. When I sync'd the new one, after about 10 mins it told me that there was not sufficient space on the phone for the sync. I was able to get my contacts, calendars, and email from icloud. Since nothing came onto my phone from the sync, I tried to download facebook from the app store only to be told there is no space. Under settings, it says I have 6.4GB used, 0 bytes available. There is no music, no apps, no videos, and no pictures on the phone. Where is all the space dedicated to???? Please help, I am stuck home with pneumonia and really trying to avoid having to make a run to the Apple store this weekend :/
