It is possible your mom might be right...unless you can make a persuasive case for why you actually need one.

The MacBook Pro is one of the most expensive laptops available, with capabilities most people do not need. Why do you need one? Is there something about the AP and IB classes that a MacBook Pro would be needed for, as opposed to a MacBook Air or a Windows laptop? I'm not trying to be against you, I'm trying to help you come up with an airtight argument that you can use on your mom, for why you should be given for free what might turn out to be the third or fourth most expensive single item on your family's property other than the house and car.

Sure, I love my MacBook Pro, and it was a huge expense, but I use it to run my business and so it pays for itself and it pays my bills. But if the applications I use didn't need the RAM, disk space, and screen space of a MacBook Pro, I would step down to a MacBook Air. Because these things are not cheap and the amount of money spent on them must be justified.

If you really need a Mac notebook, you do have a variety to types to choose from. Usually, the type would depend on how much you plan to use it. MacBook Pros are expensive, and if you are going to be using it for everything you do at school, it may be worth it. But also, keep in mind that the MacBook Air you can also get for a similar (or even cheaper) price, depending on what and how long you will be using it for. A MacBook Air may be a good choice in your case (unless you plan on doing a lot of media editing), since with an SSD, you'll get some trmemdous speed advantages. And as long as you treat it VERY carefully, it should serve you well. If you plan on lugging it around with you all day, an 11" or 13" MacBook Air might not be all that bad...

And like "Green Meanie" said, if you want to persuade your parents to get you a laptop, getting a good job may be a good idea as it would show them you can be responsible, as well as a potential way to pay them back for it.

I'm a freshman and I just got a MacBook Pro retina as a birthday gift. Before that, I had a 2nd gen MacBook for three years.

My way to convince my mom to buy me a computer was my birthday. If your birthday's not around, try waiting till Christmas.....

If i were you i would get a MacBook Pro 13 inch or a MacBook Air 13 inch. Air's light and portable, and Pro is more "advanced" in terms of designing, productivity, etccc

You don't need one. Your Mother is right. There is nothing special about an Apple Mac computer. Both Windows PCs and Mac OS X PCs (you see they are Both Personal Computers, PCs) do the exact same things. The only real differences between the 2 are the Operating Systems they run and the cost of a Mac is much greater then a Win PC with the Exact Same Hardware, Yes Both use the Exact Same Hardware. As a user of both system I can tell you and your Mom Mac OS X is no better or worse then Windows. And the idea that a Mac with OS X is easier to use or that it will last longer is just totally False, Untrue. They are not faster then a PC, the software they run is the same, although software written for one will not run on the other.

So just keep using what you have and when you get out of school or whenever you get yourself a job you can spend the money You make on whatever you want .

It's fantastic that telephonedude98 got one for their birthday! I would have loved to get a gift like that.

Clearly, the likelihood of simplytia getting the MacBook Pro depends a great deal on the economic level of the family. Maybe they're rich and it makes some sense to ask for a gift like a MacBook Pro. Because in my family, so many of the family's resources were committed to just paying for our college tuitions that there is no way on earth any of us kids would have gotten a birthday gift worth over $100.
