Itunes will not recognize either ipod

Hi there!

About a month ago, Itunes (my entire computer, really) stopped recognizing either of my Ipods. My situation is this:

I have three cables. One got bumped while in the usb port (about a month ago! Might coincide with when it stopped working) so the usb is bent and it might be shot. I have another perfectly fine white usb to 30 pin cable, and a 3rd party (but apple approved) usb to 30 pin cable. I also have an ipod touch (32gb) and an ipod shuffle (8gb).

I've tried multiple cables in multiple usb ports in multiple configurations. No ipod or configuration of cables has shown any result in the device manager as ipod or apple anything or camera or USB mass storage device. Neither ipod is recognized in windows in any capacity (no drivers installed), but both ipods will charge functionally using any one of the three cords on any of the usb ports.

I'm not sure what to do from here. I've run through quite a few of the apple support things, fully uninstalled itunes, restarted my computer in safe mode and then reinstalled itunes, disabled and re-enabled apple mobile device manager etc etc etc. Short of re-installing windows (which I'd like to avoid) I feel like I've tried everything. Any guidance would be welcome!

Update!

I reinstalled windows completely! My itunes music library got caught up in the backup and carried over into the new install, but otherwise it's a pure and fresh install!

...and still my computer won't recognize either ipod. When I run Itunes Diagnostics, it has this to say:

Microsoft Windows 7 x64 Home Premium Edition (Build 7600)

Hewlett-Packard p6532f

iTunes 10.7.0.21

QuickTime not available

FairPlay 2.2.19

Apple Application Support 2.2.2

iPod Updater Library 10.0d2

CD Driver 2.2.3.0

CD Driver DLL 2.1.3.1

Apple Mobile Device 6.0.0.59

Apple Mobile Device Driver not found.

Bonjour 3.0.0.10 (333.10)

Gracenote SDK 1.9.6.502

Gracenote MusicID 1.9.6.115

Gracenote Submit 1.9.6.143

Gracenote DSP 1.9.6.45

This might be a Windows "run as administrator" on the install problem! Trying that!

Not surprisingly, not that simple. Ran on an admin account with right click - run as administrator on itunes64setup.exe. Same error report in diagnostics.

Try the following I had a permissions problem in windows 7 where the directory that defined where the installation information for the Apple mobile device drivers was not letting the files be updated. Running through these steps fixed the problem, I also had a problem with windows /identifying the files in the AMS msi file as being corrupted so I had to get a copy of these from another computer If you know someone who has a working itunes in windows 7 you may need to 'borrow' the files I've detailed in this post. hope this helps

Sep 18, 2012 6:41 PM in response to colnf

I 'borrowed' those files from a friend! File path was identical except for an _x64 where I have a _amd64. The files inside were the correct names, though!

What happens now is that nearing the end of the Itunes install, I encounter an error " Service ‘Apple Mobile Device’ (Apple Mobile Device) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services." When the installer is "Starting services".

There is nothing running on my computer that would violate these privelidges! I'm not entirely sure what's happened!

Itunes diagnostics obviously points out that Apple Mobile Device Service isn't running, but it also doesn't show up under windows' Services, making it awful hard to turn on the apple-reccomended way.

You need to look at modifying the permissions in the driverstore, instructions as follows:

You needed to change the permissions on the driver package so you can delete the corrupt files. Caution proceed at your own risk, make a mistake here and your computer may stop working and a system restore or rebuild may be required.

The first thing I needed to do was to take ownership of the folder so I could change the permissions. From windows explorer I clicked on Folder and search options under the organize button. Next I clicked the view tab and clicked on Show hidden files, folders, and drives. By unticking hide extensions for known file types and unticking Hide protected operating system files I was able to view the files I needed to remove. From the windows explorer window I browsed to browse to C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\, which was now visible and right clicked the netaapl64.inf_amd64_neutral_dc2cbd989eec1514 folder (note hexidecimal bit at end may be different on your machine) and selected properties. (if you look in this folder you chould see the net* files but you cannot delete them, doing the following lets you delete them and replace them with those from your friend.

I clicked the security tab and then the Advanced button. Under Advanced I clicked the Owner tab and then clicked the Edit button. From the change owner to: box I selected my username, and then ticked Replace owner on subcontainers and objects and clicked OK to set the changes.

Next I gave myself Full Control to the folder and files. Back on the Security tab I clicked the Edit button, and with Everyone highlighted in the Groups or user names I ticked full control in the Allow column. I clicked OK and accepted the warning message Windows presents about security and access problems. At this point I could delete the contents of the netaapl64.inf_amd64_neutral_dc2cbd989eec1514 folder.

Now put the new files you have copied from friend in here

Now try to re-installing the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) using msiexec -i AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi -log AMDS.log command hopefully you will no longer got the Rolling back action error. All that I had left to do now was install iTunes again and the iPhone was now recognized when I connected it to the PC.

If you do get the rollback error open the AMDS.log file and look through it looking for when the error occur.. When you find it post the error here and we'll see if we can work out what to do next. (The file will be quite big but this error should happen in roughly the middle of the file.

good luck

Sorry, just thought of a couple of other things you can try after the above (in case you have already done this :

try this first, turn of UCA:

Disable UAC on Windows 7

Windows 7 makes it much easier to deal with UAC settings, and in fact you don’t have to completely disable UAC if you don’t want to. Just type UAC into the start menu or Control Panel search box.

User uploaded file

You can simply drag the slider up or down, depending on how often you want to be alerted.
User uploaded file
If you drag it all the way down to the bottom, you’ll have disabled it entirely. Stop and restart windows after doing this to make sure the changes have been implemented.

now try to re-install the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) using msiexec -i AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi -log AMDS.log. watch out for the rollback message if you don't see it try connecting your ipod to the machine and you should see it install, if you get a rollback message it's not worth trying go to the next step.

if this doesn't work my suspicion is that the c:/windows/system32/DriverStore/FileRepository directory needs to have it's priviledged changed. This is because when AMS installs it also creates a directory called ubsaapl64.inf...... Go to the FileRepository directory and see if this directory exists, make sure you check the creation date and that it corresponds to the date and time when you did the installation. if it doesn't this is probably your problem.

If this is the case then change the privileges as described in the last comment but against this directory and then try to re-installing the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) using msiexec -i AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi -log AMDS.log. If it fails look in the file find the error message and tell me what it is.

Sep 19, 2012 5:48 AM in response to colnf

Quickly before work!

One : UAC is off!

Two : AppleMobileDeviceSupport installs "correctly" with my old netaapl and usbaapl files, but will show my original problem (Mobile Device Drivers not found) in Itunes diagnostics.

When I replace my netaapl files with a friend's, the installer rolls back near the end, leaving this error in the .log

DIFXAPP: INFO: Could not open file C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\netaapl64.inf_amd64_neutral_bf78 5db627c6d127\netaapl64.inf. (Error code 0x2: The system cannot find the file specified.)

DIFXAPP: ERROR: PnP Install failed.

(Error code 0x3EE: The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid.)

Thanks so much for the help! I'll be looking harder at it when I get home agian!

Sep 19, 2012 9:16 AM in response to Fleetfeetz

looks like we may almost be there :

go to this directory and make sure the files I mentioned that you got from your friend are all copied into this directory

C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\netaapl64.inf_amd64_neutral_bf78 5db627c6d127\

my guess is you will not find them in this directory (if the directory doesn't exist create it (making sure the name is 100% the same) ) then copy the files into it.

When you copy the files across make sure the files are actually copied and file sizes are the same as the originals ( I had a problem wen I tried to extract these from the msi file with winrar I had a file corruption error message and zero file size), but you shouldn't have this problem.

If the files aren't copied you need to run the exercise to modify the permissions on the directory(s) so that you have full read write access. Repeat until you can get the files in the directory.

Now try to re-installing the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) using msiexec -i AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi -log AMDS.log command hopefully you will no longer got the Rolling back action error.

if not same exercise again check out the log file find the error message and fix the next problem.

If all this works can you confirm it as a solution here as I think it may help a lot of other people. Have a good day and good luck.

Sep 19, 2012 8:54 PM in response to colnf

msiexec -i AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi -log AMDS.log successfully installed AMDS. Searching through the log for "error" shows no actual errors reported at any point during the install. Nothing rolled back, everything went as well as you could expect.

My Ipod is still not recognized in any capacity by my computer. As a test / verification, I checked whether or not my computer would recognize my phone (did, without issues) or digital camarea (did, without issues) to determine whether or not it was a problem with the USB ports themselves or my computer's ability to figure out what was being plugged in to it, or something else.

The only indication of any problem I have (aside from the symptoms) is that Itunes Diagnostics still shows the error "Apple Mobile Device Driver not found".led

I've uninstalled and reinstalled itunes, replaced usbaapl64 / netaapl64.inf and related files so many times that I feel like I should hire someone to come beat the crap out of me if I ever try use apple products on a windows platform ever again.

I'm fairly frustrated, as you can probably tell! Makes sense when your ipod won't get recognized on your computer on a -fresh install of windows-.

😟

Trust me, you have not met frustration until you've had a problem with OS 10. Fortunately, most of its problems tend to be with permissions, which can be fixed by doing a Safe Boot. Until it starts having problems with its file system, and then you have to buy Disk Warrior to (hopefully) recover all your files to a new hard drive... and sooner or later, Apples always lose their file system....

Speaking of which,

1. Have you done a full checkdisk? Run Command, CHKDSK /F /R

2. Have you checked in MSCONFIG (Run->MSCONFIG) to see if the Apple driver is disabled there, or if the Apple processes have been disabled there? Shouldn't be, but it doesn't hurt to check.

Sep 19, 2012 11:41 PM in response to Fleetfeetz

Ok there are a couple of questions I'd have:

1. After a reboot, when you plug in your ipod, am I correct in saying that windows does not even recognise that your ipod is connected, i.e. doesn't try to install the usb device? Can you access the ipod with windows explorer, i.e does it appear as a hard drive, if it does it at least means the device is recognised.

The message you are getting is stating that it cannot find the driver, this probably means that it's not finding the drivers in the DriverStore directory, what we need to check is that the directories are actually there, can you check the amsd.log file again (or send it to me) so I can look through this file and see what is happening and check the directories it's trying to get the driver from. my guess is the usbaapl64 directory path (the hexidecimal part) that itunes is trying to use is not the one on your machine, but that's just a guess.

Other things that could be an issue (but unlikely are )

1. switch of any firewall if you have it running and make sure this isn't blocking you.

2. run services.msc to get the services window to run, check that the following services are all up and running,

bonjour service

apple mobile services and

ipod services

apple time service are all up and running

any of them not start the services, check they are running and try to connect ipod.

3. check to see if the device is appearing in the device manager, if it isn't follow apples guide on fixing this

I know it's frustrating but hopefully one of these will identify where the problem is happening now.

have a good day.

Windows has not recognized my Ipod as anything in any capacity for over a month! When I plug it in, even the ipod itself doesn't do anything (Unless it was fully out of batteries but still on, in which case it would show the apple logo and boot up, because it's getting power and charging.) The ipod does not show as any device under the device manager (Mass USB storage or otherwise), let alone in "computer" or anywhere else. When I plug my ipod in, my computer does not register any change nor attempt to install any drivers. I've both reinstalled windows and wiped and reset my ipod, so it baffles me that it doesn't just... work.

Also ran CHKDSK and MSICONFIG shows the apple services are as allowed as ever! Neither were a problem!

Sep 20, 2012 9:40 PM in response to Fleetfeetz

hi,

ok it looks like itumes is installed correctly, can you check in task manager and see if the bonjour service is running?

. The issue now is why are your ipod's not being recognised by your computer? Even if you didn't have itunes installed the pc should recognise your ipod as a storage device.

Ok, plug in your ipod to your computer

go to device manager and try:

1. go to actions and ask it to scan for new hardware.

if it doesn't find anything

2. try looking for legacy devices and forcing it to install the ipod.

If none of these work, It is sounding more and more like a hardware issue but to be certain do you know anyone who would be willing to let you test connecting your itouch to their pc with one of your cables. This way you will know the problem is not with the cable or ipod.

If you can do this and connect to their pc in any way then you know the probblem is really on your pc.

You said at the start that you have a touch and a shuffle, I presume that neither of them is being recognised by your computer. Can you make sure you have tested both again (sorry of you have done this already). If both are not being recognised then the problem really is at the pc end and we need work out why it's not recognising the device.

The fact that the ipods get power doesn't mean anything, the problem is that the communication isn't working.

look forward to your feedback

Sorry other thought:

when you re-installed itunes did you manually uninstall itunes and all the other programs from the control panel/uninstall programs ?

did you run cccleaner after this to make sure the registry had all traces of apple removed?

Sory if this is stuff you have all done but I want top make sure w ehaven't missed anything.

work through the section in this article on what to do if your device is not recognised (doesn't appear)

speciffically the section

5. Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed

and work your way through this pay special attention to this bit as it may help

.

Driver is not listed

  1. Disconnect the device from the computer.
  2. Save a screenshot by pressing the Home button and the Wake/Sleep button at the same time (the screen should flash briefly). Note: Taking screenshots and saving images on iPod touch requires iOS version 2.0 or later.
  3. Reconnect the device to the computer.
  4. Open the Device Manager in Windows as follows:
Windows XP: Click Start > Run. In the resulting dialog type devmgmt.msc and press Return on the keyboard.
Windows Vista or Windows 7: Click Start. In the dialog, type devmgmt.msc and press Return on the keyboard. If Windows needs your permission to continue, click "Continue".
  5. Expand all the sections labeled below (not all sections may be listed):
    • Imaging Devices
    • Other Devices
    • Portable Devices
    • Universal Serial Bus Controllers
  6. Look for the entry that recognizes the device as a camera. This entry should be called Apple iPhone, Apple iPad,or Apple iPod

Itunes will not recognize either ipod
