Ran Software update and now won't install and disk utility won't run.

Hi all,

I ran software update and it showed 10.4.6 is out. I did the usual and downloaded and installed the update. After downloading the update, I was returned with unable to install this package and they put it in the trash. The warning box said to drag out of trash and try again.

When I boot the installer pkg, it works until select drive and my only hd doesn't show up like it usually does. The computer reboots fine and runs normal to the eye. I wanted to rebuild permission thinking something was messed up , but disk utility says a background app needed by disk utility didn't run so I should quite DU and rerun.

Short story is I cannot run disk utility and the installer app is hosed. I never was able to run the 10.4.6 installer so 10.4.5 is still in the about this mac window and software update won't run.

Any suggestions? Not really in the mood to reinstall fresh at the moment.

I had a similar problem running the update from software update, It showed the same message "couldn't install and package is in the trash" however in my case
the about this mac did say 10.4.6 before restarting and the package was not in the trash as the message said. I restarted and the rebooted twice (like the directions said it would) and it appears to be ok, the package was in the trash after the reboots. I'm just concerned that something might crop up later, so I'm downloading the combo update right now.

I did try manually as well. the ppc update and the combo too. That was my first thought is the first download was corrupted. I have gone thru what I thought could have happened and tried to remedy. Been using macs since 88 and just stumped. I do backup my user so I won't lose anything. Like I said, the computer is still behaving normal and reboots fine. The tiger disc did repair fine as well.

FWIW, the 10.4.6 update went well for me using the Software Update app. It did not leave a package receipt with the name previously mentioned, but did leave one named "MacOSXUpd10.4.6PPCPatch.pkg."

I'm not sure the receipts are actually installers, though. Typically, they are much smaller than the downloads -- in this case only 2.4 MB.
