Ever since I updated my Windows Vista Laptop to Service Pack 2, iTunes has not been able to update with the a popup with "error occurred while installing updates. If the problems persist choose Tools > Download Only". And i DID have to Reinstall iTunes from scratch, so please help me. I really want to get rid of this problem thats been bothering me for 2 years

I have the same problem, and when I tried to install from the file, I received this:

"An error occurred while attempting to create the directory: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs"

I checked; this directory is already there; it's where all the Program Shortcuts for the Start Menu are kept. Why is iTunes trying to create a directory that's already there?

Edit: I should mention, I've tried un-installing, and now the re-install won't work either (for the same reason), the same thing happens when I try to update Adobe Reader, and I've tried seeking help on both Adobe and Microsoft's websites, to no avail.

I've got it to work. If that's the same error you received, then I have to assume you're using Windows 64-bit (as all the people I found with the same problem do). This was what worked for me, courtesy of Shiggity from sevenforums.com -

Go to "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu", right-click "Programs" and select "Properties".

On the Security Tab, Click "Advanced".

Go to the Owner tab, and Click "Edit".

Change the owner to yourself, Check "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects", and Click OK.

And then re-run the installation. Hope that works!
