gardenbug needs help debugging....

Please check out my previous posts on 'iTunes saga continues' and 'need help deciphering error messages'. Error message (-1450) to be exact. My library is nearly at an enigmatic stage, and I'm stuck. B Noir has given me some good advice, but my iTunes issues have yet to be resolved.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Tell that evil Norton software to leave the iTunes folder out of its scan.

It's not just Norton, either...mcAfee and Spysweeper have also caused the 1450 error.

For example

No I don't think the actual music is corrupted, one would think norton would be smart enough not to actually change those files.

Just close down iTunes, rename the iTunes Library.itl file to iTunes Library.old.

Then restart iTunes. Your library should be blank, just drag all the music files back in. Now let's hope it makes a new, non-corrupted library.

Katrina,

I'm getting the distinct impression that Norton is not thought very highly of by those who are helping me.

When you say 'close down iTunes', I assume you mean just close the program and not go through the reinstall process.
I'll try renaming the library to iTunes.old and see what happens.

However, I have gone through the whole reinstallation process, dragging my music back, and iTunes continues to create new libraries. The only good news is that I can listen to my music via my laptop. I don't want to hook my iPod to my computer until this problem(s) are fixed.

Thanks for you guidance,

Yeah, don't reinstall - just close down iTunes, the itunes.exe will be gone from Task Manager.

We're seeing if Norton is leaving the itunes library.itl file alone. Assuming that Norton is the one that was messing with it.

Or are you saying that after telling Norotn not to scan the iTUnes folder, iTunes is still making those damaged libraries?

Right, I hate Norton. I think it's poorly written, expensive, and doesn't do the job it should. It messed up one PC of mine, that was enough.

It might be something other than Norton casuing your troubles, but it's high on list of usual suspects.

OK, here's today's deal:

I had a clean library. I was dragging in music from iTunes folder, nearly 3/4 of the way done.

A song was playing. I hit the stop button. The song was from a file recently dragged into iTunes.

Here we go again...
'The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-1450).'

I hit the error OK, and the song continued to play and the error message was still there. Hit OK again and the error message wouldn't go away. I tried closing the error message by hitting the X but that didn't work either. The song continued to play.

Suddenly, I rec'd a Norton pop-up message. 'Norton Antivirus...Your virus protection has been updated.'

Checked control panel. Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect. iTunes is excluded from system antivirus scans, but not internet scans. I thought my exception was valid for any type of Norton scan, but I guess not. I'll have to change that next.

After I got done checking my Norton settings, I realized the song had prematurely stopped playing. Tried getting rid of the error message by clicking OK and the next song on the list started playing. Hit ESC and the error message went away for a moment. Hit ESC again, error message went away, and I closed I tunes.

Checked iTunes folder to see if a backup library had been created due to the (-1450) error. No backup library was created. The iTunes folder 'looked' normal.

I Opened iTunes again, and the music recently dragged in was still there, except the last file I was dragging before the error message appeared. So, I tried to drag that file into the library and rec'd error message:
'The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-1450). Still no backup library file created.

Not a short read, but I was trying to document everything that was happening step-by-step. I'm perplexed. Any ideas on what I should try next???

No, not a short read, and my quick conclusion is again, Norton is shoddy software.

You need someone from symantec (norton makers) to help you troubleshoot this.

Because my advice is to try (evil laugh, just try...if you've 10+ hours to spare), just try and get Norton off your system so it can stop messing things up.

Did I mention I hate Norton?

You know, Norton are not catching a lot of qoologic problems that are stopping itunes. qoologic variations have been around for years. There is no excuse for Norton missing this.

If you have seen my relentless posts about scanning for malware with ewido, you'd know.

I've no idea if these are Norton users with lapsed subscriptions.

My point being, there is free security software out there that can pick up problems where an expensive, invasive, counter-intuitive $70+ program cannot.

Katrina,
You're a kick. So, basically, you believe the evil Norton is causing my iTunes library problems. Including error 1450???

The thought of having to rely on tech support gives me a headache. Usually, it's like going to Best Buy and asking a salesperson for knowledgable assistance. That said, I do appreciate your candor.

I receive automatic updates from Norton and can only hope that they are giving me accurate information. What do you use for security softwar???

It's a kick talking to ya, too.

Actually, I am looking at you now, as a savior who will go the extra mile and demand that Norton fix their drivel.

I have asked asked numerous other lost Norton souls to step up and volunteer for the task. None have been stalwart enough.

Are ya up for it?

Norton is pre-loaded on countless bundled PCs, you'd be doing the whole world a favor!

Apr 6, 2006 12:06 PM in response to Katrina S.

Katrina,

I sent Norton a lengthy e-mail today...didn't want to wait for an online chat. Thanks for reading my long responses and occasional vent sessions.

Yeah, I've seen many posts re: ewido's software. What do you use, if I may ask?

Question: If I dump Norton, I've still got Windows security, but I don't totally trust that either. What to use?

So Norton needs their drive fixed, and you're looking for someone with the guts & tenacity to see the process through.

I'm assuming since that since nobody has stepped up before, this will most likely be a long road. I'm among those who receive Norton preloaded into her Dell laptop.

Question: So, what specifically would I need to do? I may be up for it...would like to know how deep the hole will be first.

gardenbug,
yeah, gardeners need muscles for all that digging!

I use AVG Anti-virus to scan my email, MS AntiSpyware Beta, ewido , spybot search & destroy, and lavasoft Ad-aware.

About what to tell Norton, ask them why
1) Norton blocks iTunes+QT installs. It's supposed to ask the user if its oK to install iTunes, not just block it.
2) Why they can't catch the Qoologic-type stuff that interferes with iTunes and QuickTime. ewido is free and catches it. This Qoologic thing hit back in October 2005 and it's still not in one of the updates?

But anyway. Did you get that 1450 error message to go away?

Apr 9, 2006 5:54 PM in response to Katrina S.

Hi Katrina,

Curious...real name, windy persona, or just a username?

Still getting error (-1450). Did manage to get music onto my iPod before receiving it though. Oh, happy day! I only had to start clean twice. Now I'm getting the 'invalid library', 'cannot save the library' errors, & it just emptied my library. That I know how to retrieve...I'm getting good at it.

I sent Norton an e-mail, and they responded with answers to problems that I don't have...go figure.

Thanks for the security info.

hey gardenbug,
Katrina was just a name...until that evil hurricane in New Orleans.

Have a look at this post by Otto42. Maybe I am just full of hot air that it's Norton's fault you're getting the 1450. He links to a Microsoft article, something scary looking about system resources.

Anyway someone dredged it up recently, figured you might not have seen it.
