Q: Is there no hope for Java?

I currently went to play some NES games online and I couldn't get any to load. After trying different websites, several told me I needed Java or to update my Java.

The newest version (7) is said to only be available for Lion (I obviously have OS X 10.5 Leopard). When I did a Software Update to update whatever latest version of Java I could get, no updates were found. I then searched for the newest version available for 10.5 (which I downloaded from Apple), installed it. Installation complete and these sites are still telling me I need Java or to update my Java. I've restarted. Even checked out my Java settings to enable plug in's? as one website suggested, but that wasn't even an option.

Bottom line, am I doomed to not be able to play these games that require Java because I don't have Lion?

Thanks and take care.

    Hello Victoria,

Not sure why you think Java7 is only for LION.   I'm on Snow Leopard and I received a Java7 software update the other day an downloaded with no problem.

    Hi Seventy,

Thanks for the reply. This is why I was under that impression (when I go to java.com to update):

    Java for Mac

For Java versions 6 and below, Apple supplies their own version of Java. Use the Software Update feature (available on the Apple menu) to check that you have the most up-to-date version of Java 6 for your Mac. If you have problems with downloading, installing or using Java 6 (and earlier versions) on Mac, please contact Apple Technical Support.

Java 7 requires an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.7.3 (Lion) or later and administrator privileges.

Am I reading it wrong? What does it mean?

    Thanks and take care.

    Hello again Victoria, (lovely name)

Probably not.   As I mentioned, I'm running Snow Leopard and checking back on Software update, I installed a Java update on September 9th (update No.10).   I had not taken into account that you are running 10.5 Leopard.   As Snow Leopard is not so easy to order nowadays you're going to have to do more digging.

Two things I'm suggesting.  Check out 'More like this" in the column to the immediate right of your first post.   Those posts (and the links from them) are often a useful source of info.

Secondly; have you checked out with the games developer to see if he/she has any ideas?

    Good luck.

The last version of Java for 10.5.8 was Java 1.5 (1.5.0_30 more precisely)

For Mac 10.6 the Java version is 1.6

If an online game requires a version of Java newer than is available for Leopard 10.5, you are stuck unfortunately.

    You can check which version of Java you have in Terminal. Enter this line and press return;

    java -version

    Hello again Seventy,

What did you mean when you said "As Snow Leopard is not so easy to order nowadays you're going to have to do more digging."?

Thanks for the suggestions. The five suggestions in the More Like This box doesn't really have anything applicable. As for the game developers, or rather, website hosts...I don't think it would come up with much. I've tried about 15 completely unconnected sites and not one game will load and I've just about positive they are all in Java. I can say, that months ago, these games on these sites worked just fine. Now nothing.

    Thanks again and take care.

    Hi Roam,

When I put that into Terminal I got this "java version "1.6.0_26" " ....which seems like a higher version, no? How could that be?

And man, is Leopard 10.5 really that old that you think that could happen? Is that reasonable? That Java would just exceed it like that? Oh man.

    Thanks!

I missinformed you, sorry. I just checked on my Leopard OS and you are right, "java version "1.6.0_26" is on that as well.

OK, well that is slightly better for you, but I guess you still can't play the game if it requires version 7, but we don;t know what version is actualyy required, or maybe I skipped over that.

One remote possiblity, is to check in /Application/Utilities/ and open Java Preferences. There may be two showing in that panel 1.5 and 1.6. Make it so that 1.6 is at the top. You can just drag it over the other to get it to the top.

    Hi Victoria.

Because Snow Leopard is no longer available in the storea, yet is a necessity for upgrading to Mountain Lion, you need to buy it from Apple.  The Ebay / Amazon options are very expensive.

Before you buy anything, first make sure your Mac is compatible.

Minimum specs for …     Snow Leopard.  Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard -         Read the Technical Specifications

Combo updater for Snow Leopard.       Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1

Buying Snow leopard from Apple.        Last I read, you must call them (1-800-MY-APPLE). It is $29 plus tax for family pack and $19 plus tax for a single.

I know this wasn't your original problem but you asked the question.

The 'More like this' section should be read in conjunction with the links that the individual comments raise.    eg. each comment has more and different 'More like this' attached to it.

    Hope this helps.

The last Java update for Leopard was:

Update 10, 29 June 2011 - This release updates J2SE 5.0 to 1.5.0_30, and updates Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_26. J2SE 1.4.2 is no longer being updated to fix bugs or security issues and remains disabled by default in this update. Support for out-of-process Java applets on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard has been removed with this update.

This release is only for Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later versions of Mac OS X 10.5. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1359

    and for Snow Leopard:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1360

Note: Java 1.6 for Leopard is 64 bit only, but for Snow Leopard it is available for both 32 and 64 bit.

But since August 2012 updates for Java (and especially Java Runtime Environment, which is what you actually need) must now be downloaded direct from Oracle:

    Klaus,

    Thanks for the info.

Actually, through my search, I did find: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre7-downloads-1637588.h tml

And I downloaded it...and guess what I got?

    "Error Reading Package

    JavaScriptError"

Haha. Ain't that something. Nothing is easy. Ha.

Just to make sure, I tried downloading and opening it 3 times, once after restarting. Same.

    Thanks and take care.

    Roam,

I actually did move the 1.6 to the top, as it was below the 1.5. I did this just cause. I'm glad you mentioned it to reinforce that I hadn't done something I shouldn't have as I wasn't 100% I should have. It just seemed logical. Ha.

And no, I don't know exactly what version these games are requiring. When it requests that I get or update Java it doens't specify. Is there any way I can tell without trying to find a web master, emailing and waiting for a reply?

    Thanks and take care.

Thanks for all the info, Seventy.

I already started asking around to see if anyone knows a good way to get it other than calling and ordering. Might end up having too.

And I'm pretty sure it's compatable. It's a Mac book, one of the aluminum ones from 2008ish.

    Thanks and take care.

My last suggestion (which on reflection should have been the first) is to make sure that you have Java enabled to play this online game. Check your Safari Preferences, tab Security and make sure Java is seleceted.

Nope, that was a Java 6 update. 7 is only for Lion and above.

This release updates Java SE 6 to version 1.6.0_35.
