'AVCHD content' package instead of a 'Folder' named PRIVATE in Mountain Lion

'AVCHD content' package instead of a 'Folder' named PRIVATE in Mountain Lion prevents FCPX from recognising it as a Camera Archive thus can't import media.

Does anybody know how to work around this issue?

I know how to look inside the package, but seeing the contents does not help importing it into FCP X.

the actual FCPX.05 handles such files as part of a AVCHD structure like charme …

no need for any clumsy work-arounds.

and, btw, these 'private' files are just packages - if there's any need to look inside, ctrl-click 'show package content'. It is just a display thing. the sub-folders inside are also packages …

for good reasons, on mybehalf - people shouldn't fiddle with the innerts. - 😁

what makes me stumble is …

so, you do NOT import straight from a camera/SDcard, but a sort-of back.up?

I backup my cards by dragging the WHOLE content into some folder onto my extHDD ('Mac'formatted).

via the 'Import from camera' dialog (NOT file!), I select that folder via Open Archive - does work here every time, OSX10.81/FCPX.05 ....

😐

you have to select 'card2' to import, no insides ....

Karsten, I believe you are doing exactly the same steps, but see some kind of different names on the buttons. When I press Cmd+I, I get into the Camera Import dialog. I have to then press Open Archive... to import from a folder, that has a copy of SD card.

That is why I am calling it a Camera Archive.

Then I select the Card1 or Card2 folders that contain a copy. This is a great screen:

Card1 was copied while Mac OS was still 10.7, Card2 - after an upgrade to 10.8.1. Card1 imported into FCP X 10.0.5 flawlwssly, while Card2 gives me an error a screenshot of which is higher in the thread.

As for Tom's request - I did exactly that. Except for Card1 will not show it's contents in the column view - I have to Ctrl+Click and select Show Package Contents to get inside.

Hopefully this clarifies the situation a bit more. I'm stuck with the project at the moment 😟

OK

DCIM is there for the stills. It's empty on my card. I've never seen a file in MISC as well. I'm able to import from folders containing only the PRIVATE folder, but only unless this copy was made in Mountain Lion and PRIVATE appears as a package.

I am lucky - the card has not been erased somehow. I was able to get the material in straight from the SD and then started experimenting.

Here are my findings. They might be useful to someone later:

1. Making an EXACT copy of SD does not make it 'importable' in FCP X 10.0.5.

2. Besides DCIM, MISC folders there are MP_ROOT and hidden AVF_INFO folders and they don't matter as well

3. To use the archives in FCP X 10.0.5 on Mac OS X 10.8.1 you have to adjust your workflow and actually CREATE archives using the FCP's Import dialog by pressing the button next to Import Archive.

4. All folders, containing PRIVATE folder in them, that have been created before Mountain Lion DO IMPORT without any issues using the same Import Archive dialog of FCP X even under Mountain Lion

With this I must admit that I've found no working solution to the issue, but at leasted I was able to experiment and clearly identify a working process for the future.

Thanks for your help, Tom and Karsten

I have no trouble importing the folder structure that I posted a screen shot of.

1. Making an EXACT copy of SD does not make it 'importable' in FCP X 10.0.5.

Do you have mixed media on this card? That can prevent it from appearing in FCP.

3. Not so. I can still create archives by copying the entire folder structure and have it work correctly. I have not seen this fail yet in 10.8.1.

No mixed media. Once again - I went through my experiments and now I will surely prefer to archive my cards using the FCPXs 'create archive' function - I feel that this will be 'the most supported' option.

Lucky you, Tom. I will not risk it again. Either way - test before erasing the card as the experience may vary.

Good luck

Sergey
