Apple Mail refuses to accept my password for Gmail account

I can't believe Mountain Lion has such a silly problem. Apple Mail will not accept my Gmail password no matter what I try. All I get is "Mail can't connect to the account "Gmail"" Enter the password for xxx@gmail.com. (where xxx is my username) It doesn't matter if I have just my gmail username for username or the whole address. Worked just fine in Lion. Does it work for anyone? Maddening. Perhaps I should simply not use it?

I have multiple email accounts forwarded through Apple Mail. My GMAIL Imap account will not update. I can see in Google onine that GMail is current. But my Apple Mail will not update. I have not changed settings. I deleted a huge # of unread messages on Dec 26th, and, since then, Apple Mail will not pull my GMail account in.


I am sooo frustrated. Not that you can get any advice from Google, but Google will say it is Apple Mail. Apple will say it is Google. Both will point the finger at the ISP.


Any ideas?

I found that the problem with many gmail installations in Apple Mail (and other mail clients) is related to Google's two step verification process. If you remember getting text codes on your mobile device(s) asking you to verify your email account, this is a possibility for you. You may have to log onto GMail from your browser, got to the "gear" icon->settings->Change account settings->Change password recovery options, then put in your password again at the resulting verification window, and turn off secondary verification via text in the ensuing windows. This prevents the mail client from failing to verify via a password you may not even have access to in order to go online. Once you have done this and saved it, you should be able to send and receive mail and no longer be prompted for your password unsuccessfully over and over. MAke sure, of course, that all your regular email settings are correct again (like FULL email address in user name fields), now that you may have changed lots of things in the vain attempt to overcome this rather obscure problem

P.S., it's a Google issue, not an Apple issue. It seems Apple and Apple Mail hs been getting a bit of a bad rap here for being asked to do the impossible based on what it has been given to work with.

Problem solved, I turned off the 2 step verification and the gmail passwork was accepted. My last remailing problem is that I have 3 accounts in apple mail. After I reinstalled the last email account I noted a lot of Mail activity and several hundred incoming message. Unfortunatly I don't see any numbers next to the email namesbut I see a lot of messages in the junk file that should not be there.User uploaded file

And just like Steve I had to log onto gmail from my browser, go to the "gear" icon > settings > Change account settings > Change password recovery options, then put in your password again at the resulting verification window.


But then, unlike Steve I clicked a link saying sth like "settings for two step verification" and then another link saying sth like "handle program specific passwords" (not sure about the wording in English since my gmail is in another language).


At ths screen I could create a custom password for Apple Mail that, I guess, bypasses the two step verification. This password I then added for my account in Apple Mail via System preferences > Email > [my account] > Details.
