I have tried to completely reboot my iphone and after all that trouble I still show 3.5 gb of 'other' storage I cannot free up. It is really irritating. Why hasn't apple found a fix for this issue,

WHat else can I do short of having to completely clear out my iphone again - which I do not want to do again?

    try clearing safari history and ccokies/data located in settings/safari. other that that its a case of backing up the important stuff and restoring.  Sometimes part downloaded files can be stored in other.  Unless the phones fw has been modified you cant remove the part downloaded stuff

    For what issue?  Applications can keep their own data on the phone.  Do you use Dropbox?  That's just one.

    "Other" should be around 1GB.  3.5 GB is an indication that something is corrupt on the phone.  You will have to restore it to resolve this.  Be sure to import your photos and videos to your computer, sync with iTunes to create a backup and transfer purchases, and back up your contacts separately (by, for example, syncing them with iCloud) prior to doing so.   See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414.

    Well if it's applications data, why does it keep increasing, it should be a fixed amount of usage if it is related to

    applications!

    Apple does need to sort this out!!

    I don't know about iPhone, but for my iPod Touch, I just had to clear my old messages. That cleared up a ton of space. So look through your apps that may be building up data.

    how?

    To clear messages, you open a conversation you want to clear and tap "Edit" in the top right corner and "Clear All" in the top left. Idk about texts though, or if texts would even be the issue.

    I think a restore would fix the problem however how are you supposed to back things up and restore if when you restore, everything gets re-corrupted again?

    Maybe it's not corrupted. Other is REAL DATA that you chose to have on your phone. It isn't broken down separately, but all of the texts, mms messages, email, game stats and positions, facebook postings and images, album art, and dozens of other things are all in Other. To make it smaller you have to keep less data on your phone.

    @Lawrence Finch

    This thread, a poster indicates that having other is considered corrupted data: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3997054?start=0&tstart=0

    Other CAN be an indication of data corruption, as corrupt data will show as Other, but that doesn't change the fact that there is real data in Other also.

    I'm fairly certain that my Safari "reading list" is being represented in Other, and because I'm behind on my reading, I now have 4.91 GB in Other.  I save web pages from a graphics/image intensive web periodical to read so that I can go back and catch up on them later.

    I just wish the Other section were more transparent, because it took me months to figure this out and I would like to manually manipulate that data to make room for, say videos, or new music.

    Thanks for listening, Steve.  Oh, wait...

    I followed the suggestions of randers4 with the following results:

    -------------

    Before restore:

    Apps = 4.72 GB 163 apps

    Other = 2.60 GB

    Free = 2.24 GB

    -------------

    After restore:

    Apps = 2.22 GB 163 apps

    Other = 898 MB

    Free = 5.50 GB

    -------------

    There were no changes in size to Audio or Photos.

    Worked like a charm ... Thanks ...
