does icloud back up my entire music library on my phone?

I am thinking about backing up my iphone 4 now because I am going to buy the Iphone 5. I have my entire music library on a back up hard drive that i can connect to my computer. However, this takes forever. Can I use Icloud to back up my entire music library on my phone so when I get the Iphone 5, I can just put the music on it very easily, or does it only back up "purchased" songs?

I don't blame you for not trusting it. Albums I've purchased and even just certain songs from albums have disappeared and Apple say they have no control over it.

I've lost 7 albums that I know of that I've tried to re-download and they are simply not there anymore. Apple did credit me but said I would need to back up to iCloud in future. Gifs.

Similar issues.....I just want to be able to back “ everything” from phone to phone. It’s bad that we have to buy a PC, back everything up. Hen still pay for “Apple” backup services., same as photos! All music should be included in iCloud backup, as long as you’re not going over you’re paid for storage, “everything” should be backed up.

The backup doesn't contain music, in iCloud or in iTunes. Music from the iTunes store is "backed up" in "iTunes in the Cloud" as you can redownload purchased music for free, whether you back up or not. You'll have to sync with iTunes to transfer back your music. This article overviews what is included in the iCloud backup: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4859. (You'll note that it mentions unlimited storage for backing up purchased music, but that's referring to iTunes in the cloud.) Also, restoring from a backup on your computer using iTunes is much faster than restoring from an iCloud backup. (If you're interested, this shows what's included in the iTunes backup: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946.)

What did you find confusing? Here are the key points:

1. An iCloud Backup doesn't include your music

2. You can redownload music purchased from the iTunes Store again for free. This is called "iTunes in the cloud". This is completely separate from your iCloud backup.

3. All your music should be in your iTunes library on your computer. If you need to restore it to your device you simply sync it back.

The reason it is confusing is that it is useless information. If you want to help, solve the actual problem. How do we get our music from our iPhone to another iPhone without itune. The music was clearly downloaded to the phone through a computer. Now without that computer, how do we get the music from this device to another. If iCloud won't do it, what will? It iw worthless to simply state "it won't".. Why waist yours and our time!

I have a similar issue. I had to reset my iPhone6 because it was making phone calls by itself. i backed up to both iTunes on my. Mac laptop and to iCloud.

i tried to restore from ITunes but I was told that suddenly my version of iTunes was too old to restore my iPhone. That seemed weird sine it was able to acce a backup ...so okay, I downloaded the newer version of iTunes. Then I was unable to install my new version of iTunes because I'm running Snow Leopard... And that OS wont support the newer iTunes. Now what? I restored my contacts, apps, etc. from iCloud but my music is still on my Mac laptop, not on my iPhone.

Much of my music is from CD's not from the Apple Store. So it's not on iCloud.

Ideas, anyone? This is a truly great "Catch 22". I'm not smiling though. I'm feeling betrayed.

Hi, this is exactly what happened to me. I tried working with Apple Help, but they didn't have any real solutions for me. I downloaded the new iTunes version in order to try to recover my back up from iTunes to my new phone 6S, but now the new iTunes won't work on my old computer. I can't access my music library at all! Basically, I feel like I'm being forced to buy a new computer just so that I can run the applications that have become obsolete through the constant changes Apple makes. Very frustrating.

I would love to be able for someone to tell me who we could move our music from our phone to iCloud and then back into a new phone. Apple, I would love for you to solve this one for us!

This is a user-to-user forum. With very limited exceptions (that I won't go into here) you are not speaking to anyone from Apple. If you wish to do so (with what might be a very useful suggestion) you should do so here:

Having said that, I suspect backing-up music to the cloud might not be a very good use of resources. A 10GB music library is not at all uncommon. Aside from the storage alone, think about how long it would take to upload/download that over DSL for example. I believe that is why Apple chose the process they now use.

I can appreciate your frustration with the iTunes/iPhone/Windows incompatibility. You are not the first one to encounter something like this. In the overall scheme of things this is a very rare occurrence. (Although when it happens to you, I'm sure that is of little comfort.) But (lets face it) OSs like Windows XP are not supported by Microsoft anymore either. The real issue you have is that when you upgraded to an iPhone 6s, it required a newer version of iTunes which, in turn, required a newer version of Windows. With a little research you could have found this out and made an informed decision about upgrading to a new phone.

I had this issue too, and in fact synced my phone (which had limited songs on it) to iTunes by mistake, thus erasing all my music and playlists on my computer iTunes folder. :-0 I had TONS of CD music that had taken forever to put on there, and I was freaking out.

THANK GOD I have an external backup drive that saved all of the music (and I had just plugged it in about a week before, yay!), and put it back into my iTunes folder on my computer, so I could then sync the other way, from the computer to the phone.

So the bottom line is, get an external drive. Nobody seems to really "get" iCloud and iTunes very well, and I just don't trust it or myself anymore with it. I use the HP "SimpleSave" external backup and I'm very happy with it.
