Q: iCloud refuses to save Mail's email alias?

Anyone else finding it impossible to create additional aliases in iCloud's Mail settings?

I have one alias currently (either created before or after the MobileMe transition occurred, I don't remember) but I can't seem to add another.  It clearly states that I have "2 of 3 remaining," but any attempt to add another results in an alert dialog:

Cannot save alias

This alias cannot be saved at this time.

I tried the most ridiculous combos of alphanumeric spellings, to ensure it was not a case of a previously used mail address; I tried logging in different times of the day, hoping it would correct itself, but to no avail.  Always the same vague alert.

Can someone please confirm this is an issue of half-baked Mail preferences?  Preferably a previous MobileMe customer if possible?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Dave Smith

There is an odd issue going on at the moment: if you look at the entry area for a new alias you will notice that it says @icloud.com - as there is no such address this is obviously an error. Others have complained of this and being unable to create a new alias (it's nothing to do with MobileMe). iOS6 is due out on the 19th and may change things, so I should leave it until then and try again.

It is my understanding that all new iCloud users would receive the iCloud.com so I expected that.  However I merged my mac.com address to iCloud and my first alias has a me.com domain- maybe iCloud is conflicted with what it now expects to be the rule going forward (iCloud.com) and what I've managed to force upon it?

I know there were issues "verifying" my old mac.com address from iTools / MobileMe when setting my icloud ID.  Now when I purchase digital from iTunes using my mac.com Apple ID it sends purchase emails to a Frontier email I'm forced to attach because iCloud couldn't verify that email is mine... Even though it is the same grandfathered user name as the iCloud ID.

That's why I'm curious if alias is not working for new users as well or only rollover accounts.  If it's broken universally then maybe a fix is forthcoming?

Obviously we don't know what is going on: the only clue is the 'icloud.com' in the alias creation pane. It may be that when iOS6 comes out on Wednesday things may change - I would at least give it until then before taking further steps. If it doesn't get sorted out it will probably be necessary to try Support.

New information is available since I last posted.

@icloud.com addresses are being rolled out over an unspecified period: you will get one without having to do anything, and it will be additional to your @me.com address. You will get a notification email when your account is updated. You will notice that the alias creation pane shows @icloud.com as the suffix - apparently new @me.com addresses cannot be created and I imagine you will have to wait until your account is upgraded before you can create an alias.

Thank you Roger for new info; it has been my suspicion that the migration of mobileme to icloud is the root cause but I cannot be 100% sure unless someone in the Support Communities who started their maclife with an iCloud account can confirm that alias does in fact work for them...

Vibhor97 are you of this camp?

I guess I'm near the point of creating a new, fake iCloud account just to test this myself, but I don't want to muck around with the system if the community can supply an answer.

It's really a matter of the rollout being a year ago and Apple's indifference to this aspect of usage (doesn't work for anyone, we'll get around to it maybe) or incompetence (we can't make it work for those legacy users, be vague about a fix).

It reminds me of the documented meeting where SJ gathers his team and asks, "What is MobileMe supposed to do... then why the **** doesn't it do that?"  If it is related to a soft rollout, how many years is it going to take to rollout iCloud fully?  Two years?  Five?

I know, we shouldn't care if things are broken because it's a free service-  stop my whining.  But Apple made the decision to make iCloud free to bind mobile users to the "platform."  Kinks should get worked out of calling cards sooner than later... remove the web promise of functionality if you can't or won't turn it on; if it's isolated to me/others, a disclaimer on the web page would be fair and appreciated, albeit disappointing.

Thanks to everyone for reading and responding to my search.  I mainly lurk here to educate myself but the members who post to help others should be commended.  This is a great community and my hat is off to all of you.

    Cheers

I started as a new iCloud user with no MobileMe account being converted and I cannot save an Alias account as of today 9/25/12.  So the problem still exists.

The worst thing is not having a specific date beyond "a few weeks"...

I have an original mobile me account and have the same issue as you. BUT my wife has an iCloud account and she can create new aliases successfully.   I am assuming that I have to wait for the conversion. On her account page, it lists a me.com email address and a iCloud.com address as being available for her user id. For me, it only lists a me.com address. I was able to successfully log into iCloud with an iCloud.com address for me, but it still isn't listed in the account page. So....I will give it a week or so before I address it again.  But hers works fine.

    Good morning,

The problem seems to be solved now. I just created a new "icloud.com" alias this morning and everything seems ok

I signed up to iCloud (with no previous MobileMe account) around about 2 months ago and set up some @me.com addresses. I've just tried to add a new email (again...) and it still "Cannot save alias"... not working for me.

Did you recieve an email to say your account is updated as stated in Roger Wilmut1's post above, or did you just give it a go?
