How do I set up a permanent wifi network connection?

Hi all,

I had been using my D-link wireless router for a couple of years, when it just gave up the ghost this week. I happened to have a spare linksys wireless router 🙂 which I then set up, and it works fine. My desktop pc connects fine, and my visiting friends hp laptop connects fine, on a permanent connection.

However, my MacBook Pro, whenever I close my MacBook, and then open again the next day, or later on that day... When I try to connect via the newtwork symbol in the task bar at the top, I get the message (a connection timeout occured) 😕. Each time, I have to go into system preferences > Network and I have to set up the connection with a different location (current home8!), and retype in my passphrase. I have tried locking the connection so that no changes can occur, but that doesn't help 😟.

Is there a way that I can just make this connection permanent? Why does this only happen on my MacBook, and not the other computers on the netwok?

Thanks.

So I am not exactly sure what I have managed to do. I went through Network Preferences and Diagnostics. I have managed to "remember the passphrase" on my computer, and set location to "Automatic". This as by-passed the need to re-establish the connection each time.

However, each time I turn on my MacBook Pro now, I get a message stating that none of my preferred networks are available, and I must select one from the list. Selecting my network then connects. But why do I need to do this each time? Why will it not connect just on its own, like my old wifi connection did?

Would really appreciate some help on this...

Thanks.

Some of the following you may have already tried - Change your router channel. Sometimes this is all you will have to do.

Power cycling the router. Read the router's user manual or contact their tech support for instructions.

System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network

Unlock the padlock

Locations: Automatic

Highlight Airport

Click the Assist Me button

In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.

System Preferences/Network- Unlock padlock. Highlight Airport. Network Name-select your name. Click on the Advanced button. Airport/Preferred Networks-delete all that is not your network.

Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined." Click the OK button and lock the padlock. Restart your computer.

No internet connection (wireless)

Check to see if an extra entry is present in the DNS Tab for your wireless connection (System Preferences/Network/Airport/Advanced/DNS).

Delete all extra entries that you find.

Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."
