Q: I have Mac OS X 10.5.8 and I need to update it to at least 10.6 to play a DVD. Should I update to 10.6.6 or just go for 10.6? Is it free or if I'm paying, should I update to something better?Tks!

I've looked on the forums and the Apple website but still don't quite understand this stuff. I want to update from MAC OS X 10.5.8 in order to download a DVD that requires MAC OS X 10.6 or 10.7 How do I do this? Is it free or not too pricey? And if I'm paying, should I go for a better system? And can I go straight to 10.7 or 8?

Thanks!

The upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6 (any version) is not free. You will have to purchase the retail disk set, which may still be available if you call the Apple Store. If they still have copies, the price should be just under $30 US. If they no longer have copies, you will have to look to private sellers who can charge whatever they think they can get. Once to any version of Mac OS X 10.6, you can then upgrade to the latest version, 10.6.8, at no additional charge.

You will have to have Mac OS X 10.6 before you can purchase OS X 10.7 (also now available only by calling the Apple Store) or 10.8.

    Regards.
