Screen cuts off when run magnetized object (earphones) - Macbook Air

User uploaded file

Has anyone experienced an issue where students rub earphone buds along the side of the keyboard and the laptop screen will shut off. I am worried that this damages the screen or triggers something internally that will cause issues for us later.

Thanks,

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Yes. The MBair uses magnets to detect when the screen is closed. When you move a magnet along the edge, the MBair thinks you've closed the screen and puts it to sleep.

Edit: This won't hurt your MBair.
