Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
I set up a new backup drive at home and backed up to it.
I also have one here at work which I've been using for over a year.
After setting up at home, it won't recognize the old backup. when I go to select that drive it wants me to completely erase it.
However it will do a restore using the old backup files.
Anyone know how to fix this?

nothing there seems to address the problem.
My backups are there; I can access them with the Browse function.
But when I click on the icon in the menu bar, the top item says "Time Machine Not configured"
and when I go to select my backup drive it wants to erase the whole thing and start over.
I need to activate the backups that are already there and continue on with them.
I had (I believe) the same problem as you, and I think this section on the website AnaMusic linked to will do the trick. You want the "'Associate' a backup" box, I think, but you should read the other options to see if they're better-suited to your situation. That one worked for me though. Good luck!
The problem is that solution only works for MacOS 10.7 I have 10.6.8
Did you actually try it? The author seems to suggest elsewhere on the website that it will work for Snow Leopard. If so, sorry 😟
no... i guess I will try... but the first step asks me to do something that's not possible in the time machine preferences that come with 10.6
What can't you do?
Well I just tried to do it like an idiot and it erased my backup drive.
I tried to do this:
Before starting: Log on as an Admin user, and make sure the backups in question are connected to your Mac.
Select them as your backup destination via Time Machine Preferences > Select Disk, but immediately turn Time Machine OFF so a backup won't start.
Sorry, dude. How did you delete it? Turning off Time Machine shouldn't have done that.
