my mac just started running so slow what can I do?

My mac just started running at a snails pace? Is there anything I can do to clean it up / clear it out. Or do I need to buy a program that can clean out all of the spyware, malware, etc..

Things You Can Do To Keep Your Computer From Slowing Down

If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:

Boot into Safe Modethen repair your hard drive and permissions:

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion

Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.

If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

Repair the Hard Drive - Lion

Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:

Suggestions for OS X Maintenance

For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.

OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.

OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.

I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.

For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.

When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.

Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

Carbon Copy Cloner

Data Backup

Deja Vu

SuperDuper!

SyncTwoFolders

Synk Pro

Synk Standard

Tri-Backup

Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.

Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.

Additional Hints

Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.

Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.

Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.

Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

Macs do not slow down due to accumulated filth.

They slow down for specific reasons, and those reasons are often Virus Checker and "Cleaner" and "Enhancer" programs.

To find out why your Mac is slow, start with this article:

Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used

Run this with your normal Applications open.

How much of the pie is Green?

How much is Green + Blue combined?

How many Page outs since last Restart ??

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.

Take these steps when you notice the problem.

Step 1

Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.

Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.

Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.

Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.

Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?

Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)

Step 2

You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.

Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.

Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.

When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

PLEASE DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.

Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

New post'er here:

I'm having a similar issue -- insanely slow!

I'm thinking it might have something to do with launching VMWare to run Windows -- but, I'm not sure.

It's benn happening forthe past few days -- spinning color wheel ad nausium! I shut down yesterday after almost losing my mind. Ran to the store and rebooted when I got back. Took about 20 minutes to boot and crashed several times befor booting up. This has never happened before.

I haven'd done any of the suggestions per Kappy. (I'm not too technical but could probably handlethat is necessary...)

I'm not running anyhting particularly cumbersome at the moment but, here's my data as per Link Davis:

iMac 7,1 running OS 10.7.5

CPU Usage:

When I do anything in Firefox, it becomes the highest value on the Activity Monitor and ranges from 2%~15%. When I do nothing in Firefox, Activity Monitor itself becomes the highest at around 1%~1.5%

The values at the bottom"

% User goes from about 2% (when FF is idle) to as much as about 8%

% Systen looks like it is running pretty concictantly at about 1.5% to 2%

% Idle is, of course, all that's left between 90% and 98%

Sys Mem:

Page outs and Swap used are both at 0 bytes

Disk Activity

Reads in/sec: 0

Writes out/sec: mostly at 0 but every few seconds (10~15 seconds?) ot pops up to 7 or 8, then returns to 0.

Here is my log -- it'smore than 50 but it covers the weird period. (I've saved the entire day of 12/31 preceeding the first line below, if needed...)

My reboot experience is in red below by the pic...

G&O-

You do not have to read beyond the first line:

12/31/12 2:02:29.000 PM kernel: disk0s2: I/O error.

Your Hard drive has problems. I/O Error is caused by a drive not being able to read a block, even after Error correction has been applied dozens to hundreds of times.

That drive needs to be erased with Security Erase and re-written with Zeroes (one pass). IF it survives, it has 100 percent good blocks for now, but may decide to quit in the next six months.

If it fails the write Zeroes, it is a doorstop.

Thanks GB-A.

Yeah -- I was thinking that was likely going to be a problem...

So (as I mentioned, I'm not so technical), the drive "needs to be erased with Security Erase and re-written with Zeroes (one pass)" is, I assume, software I can obtain. I imagine I should back everything up ASAP. (Especially since I never do this regularly...) Can you elaborate a little for me? (Just pretend I'm retaking kindergarden after having flunked out the first year...)

Plus, I'm always interested:

Maybe there is now a"answer" -- or, there are too many possible answers -- but, how does this happen?Seems weird that the HD just wakes up one day and says, "No. I'm notgonna read that block anymore."

And -- oh yeah -- the desktop pic that I have set was changed to the default space pic after booting. (Just thought that was weird too...)

G&0-

You have the software already on your Mac. Disk Utility.

After you are satisfied with whatever you can salvage, run Disk Utility -- you cannot Erase the drive you are running from, so this may require a new drive or boot to an alternate source of software.

Select the drive that you wish to erase and click Erase.

Use the ( Security Erase ) button and click one click to the right for Write Zeroes, one pass. (More passes just takes longer with no improvement.)

Click Erase and waist a few hours. If it passes, Merry Christmas! you have a drive with 100 percent good blocks again. [But some users would relegate it to infrequent use as a backup drive.]

Well, here's an interesting twist to things.

Only since the time the computer started running slow, I've also had another peculiar problem:

I fly around the internet (google, random pages, downloading, uploading, whetever) with no problems but, whenever I try to access "anything apple" on the web, I get error messages -- it took 4 or 5 tries for me to open THIS discussion just now and when I was finally able to open it, it took almost a full minute to load the page -- half the time (or more) I'll get errors when I try to open iCloud and when I try to write a new email message from iCloud it will take 4 or 5 tries to successfully open a new message window -- I haven't been able to access the iTunes Store at all -- et cetera...

Odd, no?! Anyone thinking malware?

how much of the pie should be Green?

Having none whatsoever can be bad sign.

How much Green + Blue

Blue (recently used but Inactive) memory can be freed instantly to provide Green free memory. No Green+Blue can be a very bad sign.

When really low, you will see PageOuts -- caused by no unmodified memory blocks available to be declared Free and paged back in later. When there is a huge sudden increase in requests for RAM, you may see major parts of background tasks rolled out to the Hard drive -- reflected as Swap Used.

These counters are cumulative since Restart, so some activity in these counters is common, but incessant increases are a very bad sign that you do not have enough physical RAM for the jobs you are running simultaneously. Use of these features allows you Mac to continue processing what you asked it to do, but this use of Disk Space to simulate RAM slows your computer down a lot.

If I could also receive advice on this I would appreciate it. My results:

CPU: % user 6.5, %Sys 1.5, % idle 92

Sys Mem: Page outs 871.5 MB, Swap used: 8.2 GB

Disk Activity: Reads 1 in/sec, Writes 0 out/sec
