I just switched to Verizon and have 2 questions regarding this whole "no talk and surf" issue:
1. If you're talking on the phone and pele text you, what happens; do all the texts just pile up and all hit you when you hang up?
2. What Happens if you're using the GPS and someone calls; does the navigation simply stall until you hang up?

Texts come through even when you're on the phone. Put the phone on speaker and switch to the messages app.
As an AT&T customer, we didn't have turn by turn for GPS until iOS6 -- don't know if Verizon was the same. I don't have experience on the phone/GPS part of your question.
Texts come through because you're on AT&T as I once was, and it can do that because it's on a GSM network, but on Verizon, I don't think it can, unless a Verizon customer can confirm.
Standard SMS does not use data. Standard texts will continue to come in while you are on a voice call as any Verizon user who's ever forgotten to flip the mute switch while on a call can tell you.
Navigation uses data when it's downloading mapping information. The GPS connection is separate from data. It's possible that a text would momentarily interrupt map updating but it doesn't stop the navigation.
iPhone to iPhone texting is iMessage, is that the same as SMS? I thought that iMessage was technically sending data?
iPhone to iPhone uses data. No, iMessage is not the same as SMS (AKA text).
So I'll just shut off my iMessage and problem solved, right? I have unlimited texts so what's the difference? This way I can receive and send texts while on the phone if I Understand correctly to iPhone or non iPhone users.
And the GPS will work so no problem.
That would work. Honestly, I've had Verizon for a long time and I've never had any issues with the fact that I can't do voice and data at the same time. I've used navigation, IM programs that use data. In my opinion, it's not that big an issue.
