iPod Touch won't play through FM

I have an FM transmitter for the car, a cheap cigarette lighter one but I have had no trouble with it using various iPods, mostly different generation nanos. Recently I've tried it with an iPod touch and the music will play through the iPod's internal speakers but will not play through the car stereo at all. Is this a setting issue or just not supported through the iPod for some reason?

Thanks!

Just with an FM transmitter, the only thing plugged into the car is the transmitter through the lighter jack. The iPod plays fine through headphones and without the headphones plays fine through it's internal speakers but all that will come through the car stereo is dead air. I'm wondering if there's some setting that needs to be changed to bypass the internal speakers/headphones to have the device play over FM.
