Q: ML File Sharing

I need your help clever ones.

I've searched here and on tinternet heaps of advice most tried with no sucsess, I'm pulling what small amount of hair I have left out.

I'm not a techie so be gentle.

So I have an iMac and MBA both ML, and want each to be able to access each others files (documents mainly) whilst on my home wireless network and possibly out of the home.

Both are on my wireless BT Home Hub 2

What I've done

Enabled file sharing on each

Selected the documents path, deleted all other share paths

Alternated firewall on and off, no difference

I can see the machine but when I try to connect I get "not connected"

I can connect to my canon printer share

I'm sure it's something silly, but for the life of me I don't know what

iMac (24-inch Early 2008), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

I am not sure on how to share files between Macs in the same network, but I found the following Apple Article in here:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1549?viewlocale=en_US

Hope this explains better this Mac OS X feature.

I had various connection problems with BT since last Thursday so I having tried all sorts I decided to disconnect the BT Home Hub and replaced it with an old Netgear router which I last used two years ago. All has been working fine now for 24 hours. I even plugged BT Vision into the Netgear and that seems to be working fine too.

My advice is to jettison the Home Hub and see if that helps. In my opinion BT bought some crummy kit which was not tested with Mac configurations, so either the kit is faulty or the set up instructions are faulty. It has been slightly flakey ever since we got it - but this seems to have got unbearably worse since 10.8
