You can if the printer supports AirPrint.
It does support wireless printing. The printers that are listed on this page support AirPrint (the iPad and printer just need to be on the same wifi network for AirPrint printers) : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356 . If your printer isn't listed then you will need an app - the printer manufacturer may have their own app in the store that supports it, or there are a number of third-party printer apps.
If that wireless printer is capable of "airprint". If its not, there are APPS for printers(ie HP, Epson etc) that are capable of printing from the ipad. If your printer is wireless( new enough) most likely its a YES.
The question is...is it airprint enabled, or will you have to use an APP to print.
Yes you can print wirelessly from your iPad.
At home, I've been successfully printing using an older HP Officejet J4680 series wireless printer. I've been printing using the Printer Pro Lite app on my iPad.
Its been working great!

If I wanted to print from my iPad, could I do this without going through a WI FI network?
Eg if I had my iPad and printer in a hotel room where I wouldn't be t my home WI FI network?
Thanks in advance.
Unfortunately not. It will require a wifi network to be setup before AirPrint can be utilitized to print from an iPad.
lots of third party apps! try printdirect for free 🙂
