Q: iCloud Mail: Alias cannot be saved

When I logged in on iCloud.com (also on my iPod Touch) my mail aliases have been disappeared! And that happens now that I wanted to switch to iCloud as mail service. Then I tried to create a new one, doesn't matter what I fill in, what label color I choose or what description I give, It just doesn't let me create an alias, the message I get is, and I try to quote: 'Your alias cannot be saved!'. That's it! I wish I could create an alias because I use my alias as, some kind, of my primary address.

I tried it in the web app, as well as in my iPod Touch, they've just vanished, gone.

To be clear: I am no mobileme user, nor have my account been transferred (mobileme -> iCloud).

Can anybody help me or does anybody has the same problem? Please let me know in this discussion topic so we can collect all these issues.

This issue has been running for a couple of days: a number of people have reported it. If you look at the page for creating aliases you will notice that the suffix is @icloud.com - there is at the present moment no such address, but iOS6 is due out tomorrow and there have been rumours that it will bring that address into use. So possibly this problem is tied in with iOS6 and will be resolved when it is released. Possibly.

But, you can also surf to icloud.com for using the mail app and notes etc. So, the domain is there, isn't it?

Apple have now announced that @icloud.com addresses will be issued:

    About @icloud.com email addresses

This is being rolled out over an unspecified period and it seems likely that you won't be able to create an alias until your account has been updated to access this address, though obviously I'm guessing.

I have the same problem, about 2 days now. I get the error:

    "Cannot save alias"

"this alias cannot be saved at this time."

The suggestion is that it will be fixed in the near future?

Yes - see my post above: we don't know how long it will take them to go round 150 million accounts and bring them up to date.

I have solved this for my own account (created under @me.com) by signing in with my username@icloud.com for the first time. I was then allowed to create an alias.

I have not been able to solve the same problem with another account created under @icloud.com however. Has anyone found a way to solve this problem without waiting for Apple to fix it?

The .me alias i replaced now with the @icloud.com.

So al the .me adressess i had (and did not use) are now @icloud.com

But if i e-mail to my e-mail adres (or alias) @icloud.com the message is rejected.

Seems that there is some development, i'll wait a little longer. The error now is:

Reason: Remote SMTP server has rejected address

Diagnostic code: smtp;550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias:  *****@icloud.com

    Remote system: dns;p01-asmtpout.me.com (TCP|17.172.204.247|41851|17.172.193.192|25)

Roger, I hope you can help.  I have an iPad2 and iPhone 5 with OS v. 6.0.1, just set up an icloud e-mail account and it works fine and synchs between devices as it should.  I want to set up aliases, an according to instructions I should be able to do that from icloud mail - but - I do not get access to a preferences pane - I looked in settings as well as the mail pane and cannot locate "preferences".

    Any ideas?

    Jeff

You can only create aliases at the iCloud website, and you will have to access that using a browser on a Mac or PC.

Go to http://icloud.com and then go to the Mail page. Click the cogwheel icon at top right and choose 'Preferences'. In the pane which opens click 'Accounts' in the toolbar. You will see a box with your address in it and a '+' sign at the bottom - click that and you can create up to three aliases.

    Roger

I am trying to set up another alias for my account.  Although on most of the ones I try I get a "not available" on one I get "Cannot save alias at this time".  Is that something that will clear or does it really mean that particular alias is not available?
