Hi, this has worked for a few...

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712

10.7 & 10.8…

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

208.67.222.222

208.67.220.220

Click OK.

Also, turn off IPv6:

System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6

Or whatever Interface you use.

BDAqua's suggestion with creating a new location helped me a few months ago when I initially couldn't connect to the internet randomly. Today, I came across the same issue but found a new solution (perhaps to a totally different problem), but bottom line is I wasn't getting internet connection.

I'm running on Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.3

I have no idea if this will help, but I just fixed an issue myself and felt the need to share it with others. So even if it doesn't fix your situation, maybe it will help someone else who comes across this. My internet wouldn't work wired or through wifi, and it seemed to be a DNS Server issue. I had no idea what that meant, but thats what all my research led me to believe. My internet only worked when I would use a VPN, which was not a permanent solution I was willing to accept. Anyways, I would go to safari and google chrome and nothing would load, I would just get 1/8th of the loading bar stuck in place. All I did was go to System Preferences -> Network -> Assist me -> Diagnostics . The rest should be pretty self explanatory. I had to press "continue" at some point to give the computer permission to change my DNS Server settings back to normal... even though they weren't changed by me in the time frame of driving home from work. Hope this helps SOMEONE!
