airport extreme slow with ethernet connection

I would suggest that you change the AirPort Utility's Ethernet WAN Port setting from "Automatic" (the default) to either 1000 Mbps / Full Duplex (try this first) or 100 Mbps / Full Duplex.

1000 Mbps didnt work at all and 100 made the problem much worse. This morning it was really slow again, I rebooted the router and the speed is back up again.

More information leads me to believe it's a router problem. If I reboot just the cable modem, little or no improvement in speed. If I reboot the router, the speed is normal for awhile and then slows back down again.

I called Apple tech support and they had me change channels of both 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz. It seems my problem was caused by interference. I'm not in an apartment building, but in a small neighborhood. There was only one other neighbor in range on the same channel.

It's been several days now and my internet speed has been back to normal.

You wouldn't think that wifi speed would affect the wired connection to the router, but it did.

Hope this helps others in the future.

What change exactly did you make? I'm having a similar issue now, fast connection at the modem, but after a while the extreme slows to about 1/5th the speed of the modem speed. A reboot fixes it, but that's just not a solution.

I AM in an appartment, could I switch and LOCK IN some other channel ranges?

I suspect you have the same problem as I did living in an apartment. It seems it doesn't take much interference from other routers to cause a problem since I only have a few houses nearby.

Open Airport Utility, then under the Wireless Tab change "Radio Selection" to manual. the change both frequencies to something different. In my case I used 157 for 5Ghz and 9 for 2.4Ghz. You may have to try different channels so keep track of the ones you have tried.

My airport router is doing something weird. Internally the LAN network and DHCP is fast; pinging servers etc all works quickly. But, when I ping my network from outside, I get ping speeds in the > 1000 msec. range. I had my modem changed, and it made no difference. When I reset the airport router, for a few monute smy speed is up , but then it falls again. Itried your advice of switching wifi channels. Again for a few minutes, the router was responding to a ping request, but then it got slow again .

Guess what. I turned off wireless entirely, and it's fast. Must be interference.

You probably already tried the channel settings I posted earlier and if they didn't work you might have to try different channels that work for you.

Also make sure you're on the newest update 7.6.4.

By the way, I still have the same router and it's worked flawlessly once I changed the channel settings.
