NAT is not a Firewall. It is a layer of security, but it is in no way a Firewall. There are 4 types of Firewalls, 1) Packet Filtering; 2) Circuit Level Gateway; 3) Application Level Gateway; 4) Stateful Multilayer Inspection Firewall. #2&3 are both Proxy based Firewalls and #4 is Packet Filtering. Network Address Translation (NAT) is not considered a Firewall. I hope that's not what Apple is considering a Firewall.

Hmm, this is the first time I've been disappointed with Apple. NAT is a service or feature typically provided by a firewall, but it's not a firewall. I guess now, in order to have a session or application (packet) layer inspection, I'll need an additional appliance. Interesting because the native 'Firewall' app under Sys Pref menu in OSX does have a good bit of host-level firewall functionality, but I was really wanting something out at the perimeter boundary, rather than at the workstation level.
