Hi! I am new to iMovie - I have figured out how to put a title at the start of a clip but how do I insert a 'title' in the middle of a clip - I guess like a new chapter heading - I want it on a background/title graphic like the ones you select rather then as text over the top of the video?

Just make a cut in the Video Clip where You want text to start.
The Cut will not be seen when played - but text tool get's a start point to work from

As Bengt says, cut the clip where you want to place the title. This is also known as splitting the clip.
If you are not sure how to split a clip, just position the playhead where you want the split, then right-click (or Control-click). A pop-up menu will appear. Select "Split Clip". You can now drag the title to the gap at the split position, enabling you to select and insert a background for the title.

thank you - that finally worked - I'm finding imovie quite fiddly - but learning more as I go - thanks for your help - sure there will be more questions as I progress! :-)
