I need a CD/DVD drive for a Mac Pro 2006 - any sugguestions?

I've been on an identical hunt and read a few blogs with differing opinions. My Mac Pro has a Pioneer DVR-112D and I'm looking to add a second drive. The LITEON iHAP422 looks interesting with Light Scribe labeling function and is under $30. Its a PATA device and so I'd assume that it would work (they all work one way or another). I did read about someone with a Mac Pro who claimed that the drive door gets stuck with a LITEON drive. Something to think about. Others advise to take off the front panel. doesn't sound like my way to go. I've only been able to find a used one on Ebay so far for more than retail.

I haven't got all the answers, but I've been on Macs since '88 and bought my last 5-6 burners from them.

To get nearly any drive to work in a MacPro, you DO routinely remove the "drawer front" that ships on the drive. It is there so that the drive can be used as a flush mount drive, and is not needed for the MacPro's recessed installation.

You can use a SATA drive. There are two SATA ports on the main logic board below the optical drives. You will need a SATA power adapter cable i the drive doesn't have a four pin power connector.
