Q: Why does my iMac display keep shutting off. The rest of the computer keeps running and I have to unplug it for a while to get it to come back up.

My 27" iMac's display goes to sleep after a few min, and you can still hear it running in the back ground. I can't hold the button on the back to shut it off. I have to unplug it for a while to get it to restart.

iMac, iOS 5.1.1

Is the reason you cannot hold the button at the back because it is stuck?   If so that may well explain the constant cutting off.   It could be borderline between on and off as a result and affected by as little change as the heat once it is switched on.

What is the age and the precise model of your computer.

This Imac is less about one year old. When I hit the button to trun it off it only sleeps it. I am wondering if its the video card over heatting? not sure

Well, at less than one year old it is under warranty (and hopefully you have Apple care too).

You should take it to your Apple Store and have it examined within the guarantee period.

The problem, may not be that serious, but that is what a warranty is for.   It is also why you should take out the insurance of Apple Care.
